Which DC comic should be made into an Animated film?

I've long thought Kingdom Come would make an excellent animated movie.

Superman For All Seasons would be great also. I love that mini-series and for all the crap Jeph Loeb gets, he can, when it comes down to it, tell a damned good story.

I think you need a good, solid story that kind of exists either outside of continuity (New Frontier, All-Star Superman or Dark Knight Returns) or in continuity, but not tied into 100 other things/able to stand on its own (Batman: Year One).

I love Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War, but like was said about No Man's Land, it would rely too much on the proper set-up (namely Rebirth, a good chunk of the first year or so of Green Lantern Corps, and some elements of Green Lantern led into The Sinestro Corps War). The other problem is, and I think this was the flaw with Superman: Doomsday, when the story is too long, they have to condense things and in the case of Superman: Doomsday, excising those parts, specifically the four Supermen really weakened the movie.

So for instance, you might find the JLA created for the film teaming up with the JLI from Brave and the Bold the JLU from the DCAU, the Superfriends the Justice Guild etc with appearances from say GL TAS, characters from Young Justice, Superman and the Legion of Superheroes, The Batman, Teen Titans etc...with the Earth 2 Superman being played by the version seen in the Fleisher serials. It could sort of be a love letter to DC animation.

That would be awesome! But please, let the Super Friends be eaten by antimatter. Slowly.

Looking beyond comics per se, how about a film version of Elliot S! Maggin's novel Superman: Last Son of Krypton? Although it'd have to be a 2-parter to do it justice.

It would also have to be a period-piece, or the Einstein part wouldn't work. On the other hand, that Einstein paper was a MacGuffin anyway. Could be replaced with something else.
But I have to agree, while some details are quite dated by now (like aliens stealing Xerox machines, wth was Maggin thinking), the overall story was quite good and could make a great movie.

Has anyone figured out how to trisect an angle yet?

Either the Gray Man or Despero storylines from the Giffen/DeMatteis run on Justice League.

The first or the second? The first was kind of truncated. The second was flat-out depressing-- the League didn't succeed in saving anyone. And both were resolved without the League's help, coming close to a deus ex machina ending. Either story would need some changes.

Since it's an election year I have to suggest Prez.

Gah, my brain is bleeding. Can we just stick with his appearance in Batman: TB&TB?

You want "out of the box"? How about Will Payton Starman.

Animated Jayne! Oo, la la.

Books of Magic. (could be a series of animated films)
Doom Patrol. (Morrison run)
Mud Pack. this was 4 issues in Detective Comics (i think) where all the characters (at the time) who were called Clayface team up to defeat Batman. great story.
the first story arc from John Ostrander's run of The Spectre.

-Kingdom Come
-Batman: The Long Halloween
-Batman: Dark Victory
-Superman For All Seasons
-Superman Red Son
-Batman: The Killing Joke (this is something that Timm has said he would like to do at some point)
-Batman: Knightfall
-Green Lantern Sinestro Corp War
-Superman: President Lex

I wish they would look to older stories. Back to when a single issue self contained story had a ton of ideas. Which could be more fully explored in a single movie. Better than taking these really long arcs and truncating them down and lessening the impact.

A lot of the Elseworlds comics. Even the Imaginary Superman stories from the 60s.

It would likely never happen but if DC and Marvel can have characters crossover in comics it would be great in animation too.

I actually think that Crisis could be a really interesting choice for an animated film. I think it might be too much to include all of the worlds that were in the original story (most would be unrecognizeable to a modern audience). The modification that I would make to to make the film something of a homage to all of the animated versions of the DC characters that have been made to date.

Ooh, I like this idea.

BATMAN THE CULT would make a good adaptation.

The first 6 issues of George Perez's WONDER WOMAN.

John Byrne's Supergirl saga.

HAWKWORLD.

The original "imaginary" Death of Superman from SUPERMAN #149.

When I saw the thread title I thought... Firestorm, but if we're talking about adapting stories, I'll go with The Death of Superman/Funeral for a Friend/Reign of the Supermen and Knightfall/Knightquest/KnightsEnd. The Superman stuff would probably have to be one movie because I don't think Death and Funeral for a Friend have enough content to be their own movies. Knightfall and Knightquest (with KnightsEnd) on the other hand could either be one movie or a two-parter like The Dark Knight Returns.

The Cult would be an interesting choice since it fits the premise of The Dark Knight Rises

I doubt that we'd get another death of Superman type story since its been done.

They've already adapted the Death of Superman storyline in Superman: Doomsday

The Kinghtfall saga really would need three parts to be told effectively. The hard part might be trying to effectively introduce audiences to Jean Paul Valley and show why Bruce would pick him as his successor instead of Dick Grayson.

The fun part about Knightfall is that if handled properly you could almost make it into a self contained video series that moves from Knightfall>Knightsquest.Knightsend and then follow it up with Batman Prodigal, Contagionand Legacy and cap it all off with Cataclysm/No Man's Land (Batman in the 90s seemed to move from one event to the next without breaking a sweat)

^ I was thinking that the events in Reign of the Supermen would be the real meat of the story. That's something new. The death and funeral stuff would onlly be there at the beginning to kick things off.

Thats what should have been done originally. The four different Supermen was the best part of that whole storyline. Not the fight with Doomsday.

I don't think Bruce Timm and the others involved had much enthusiasm for The Death of Superman. The other adaptations designs were influenced by the artists who did the original stories. This had none. I guessing they choose it because its marketable to launch the line.

I liked Superman: Doomsday, but I agree that the stuff with the four Superman would have been cool. I've never actually read the Dead of Superman story arc (although I know the basics), so it would be cool to see the four superman stuff on screen.

You know, this isn't based off a comic, but I'd like to see a sequel to the Wonder Woman animated movie. I liked it, and I think they could make a good sequel.

I also would love to see a movie based off Justice League Europe - The Extremis Vector story arc (the JLI/JLE is my favorite League era ever, and this was a good story), but there is absolutely no way it would ever happen. I'd also like to see a jSA movie. Maybe not even connected to a specific story, but an all new story, with the cast of Geoff Johns JSA (Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Wild Cat, Power Girl, Mr. Terriffic, Star Girl, Hawkman, Dr. Midnight III, Hour Man II etc). An old scholl JSA movie would also be cool, but personally I'd really like to see a movie with the newer JSA team.

How about Gotham by Gaslight and Master of the Future? Steampunk Batman -- enough said.
I like the way you think. :)

Gotham By Gaslight would be awesome, especially if it had a Mignola-esque look. The story is a little thin for a seventy-minute film, I think, but adding another murder or two might be an effective way to bring it up in length.

For an out-of-the-box choice, Enemy Ace.

For another off-the-wall choice, Batman/Planetary. Actually, Planetary in general would be interesting subject matter for an animated film.
