Maybe its like RAIDERS in 1981 and R2 is visible as some back-wall decoration or picture. Maybe its in the Riverside, Iowa bar where Kirk meets Uhura? One of the posters and framed pics on the back wall?

Good theory. Just like the heavy air traffic over Coruscant in EPISODE I helped hide where Lucas and ILM slipped in the Enterprise for her cameo.

I didn't see it, but I'm thinking somewhere in the Delta Vega station as Old Spock and Kirk are on their way to meet Scotty would be a likely place to look; there was all sorts of half-seen and barely-seen stuff cluttering up the place. Or on their way to the shuttle before beaming from DV to the Enterprise seems another likely spot, for the same reasons.
