Where's Hollywood?

there was a Shannara movie in development but I haven't heard much about it . . . seems to be in development hell
there probably isn't even a script

Cory Doctorow's LITTLE BROTHER has been optioned for film. I'll be curious to see how that turns out.

These aren't sci-fi, of course, but I can't figure out why none of Terry Pratchett's books have ever made it on the screen.

Of course, I also tremble at the thought of what some schmuck might do to them in a movie, but...that's another issue.

Well there are the made for TV ones: the rather good Hogfather and the Colour of magic which I haven't seen.

Really? I've never so much as heard of these before...well, this very minute. Cool!

The driving force behind them was David Jason who's a much beloved actor in Blighty. The first offering was Hogfather which was very true to the book and very impressive. Jason played Death's sidekick Albert and was perfect. The second one he decided to play Rincewind, which I thought he was far too old for, so wasn't really tempted to see. I'm sure there are loads of people on here who have seen it though. A question about it might get more attention in a direct thread about it.

I actually saw THE COLOUR OF MAGIC available at the RedBox at my local grocery store the other day. I haven't checked it out yet.

Some rousing action films could come out of any of David Weber's, David Drake's and John Ringo's many series.

Larry Niven's Tales from The Draco Tavern series of stories would make a great basis for a regular television series. One main setting, a mostly recurring set of alien species (once you've got them built, they can be re-used). And the stories themselves, for the most part, could probably be adapted into an hour-long format.

I was thinking the very same thing. It might make a cool 1-season HBO series.

No love for Heinlein around these parts?

"Stranger in a Strange Land?"

"Time Enough For Love?"

"Moon Is A Harsh Mistress?"

FEVRE DREAM by George R. R. Martin. Vampires on the Missisippi!

That's already been done - "True Blood", big hit on HBO.

Nah. Martin's FEVRE DREAM is very different than Charlaine Harris's "Sookie Stackhouse" books. FEVRE DREAM is an historical horror epic involving rival steamboat captains in the 1850's. TRUE BLOOD is more of a black comedy/soap opera set in a contemporary Southern town.

Very different in tone and ambition.

I'd like to see:

Guns of the South
1632
First Contact
World War: in the Balance
the Star
Dies the Fire
Island on the Sea of Time
Victory Unintentional (would have to be be reset to an extra-solar planet)
