There are plenty of books that have been optioned for years: "The Demolished Man,"

That's the one I was going to nominate.

I actually own an old paperback edition that says "SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE!" on the cover.

That was back in the eighties . . . .

Would that make a good film, though?

It's been years since I read The Demolished Man, but IIRC, it was a very 'literary' book. That is to say--a lot of its impact depended on the fact that it took the form of writing.

I'm not sure how well it would translate to the big screen.

Nah. Martin's FEVRE DREAM is very different than Charlaine Harris's "Sookie Stackhouse" books. FEVRE DREAM is an historical horror epic involving rival steamboat captains in the 1850's. TRUE BLOOD is more of a black comedy/soap opera set in a contemporary Southern town.

Very different in tone and ambition.

But you know how Hollywood is...producers would think those are identical.

But since when would that stop them? Any resemblance to a current hit would be seen as a plus, not a minus.

I would like to see a film done on the game "Space 1889", or Ben Bova's "Mars", and last suggestion for the evening, "The Throne of Saturn".

And of course being a reenactor I have to second "Guns of the South".

Guns is made for the movies-but most of Turtledove's work is too convoluted and repetitive to film, IMO.

Yeah, very convoluted... an sometimes too dark.

It would most likely have to be heavily adapted but the core premise is certainly good fodder for movies. In fact, it's been so often imitated that it might not even seem very fresh anymore.

I love CLIVE CLUSSER books, but RAISE THE TITANIC and SAHARA blew as movies. I wish someone would seriously tackle one of his action/scifi books.

Sahara was OK - a lot of changes, and some dubious casting, but overall it gave me the same vibe as reading his books does.

the casting threw me off...I'd love to see JAMES CAMERON redo RAISE THE TITANIC..I mean, come one, he would be the perfect pick!!!

Actually, I'm a bit suprised no one seems to have done it already. Though, I imagine the make-up/effects costs would be pretty steep.

I vaguely remember a very short-lived UPN series called Mercy Point (IIRC) that was sort of a Sector General-lite, and no that good.
