Where should I move?

Florida is bottom of the barrel, atleast the northwestern part, lived there for years and all I wanted to do was genocide everything there and move, Texas is SLOWLY getting better, but the growing (typically conservative) asian population is negating the growing (more liberal) hispanic population, if you are interested in texas demographics

Are there any game design studios there that are hiring right now? If so, I'm moving to New Mexico. I don't mind lots of humidity, either.

There are a couple of small independent studios in Santa Fe. I don't know anything about them though. Most of the high-tech stuff is manufacture/industrial related. Intel has a huge plant here, but I'm pretty sure it pretty much just presses out processors. There's also Sandia Labs and Northrop Grumman has two large offices here, but those are both military related.

To add to Sephiroth spiel, New Mexico also has gorgeous sun sets. You can pretty much drive in any direction (from Albuquerque or Santa Fe) for an hour and come upon some of the most pristine and awesome scenery in the world. Here in Albuquerque we have the watermelon mountains which are great for hikes. And come August, one of the best aromas I have ever known fills the air. That is, of course, the sweet smokey smell of slow-roasting green chilies.

Plus, Emher, you can buy that Camaro and drive it around without fear of it ever rusting. :techman:

I'm a pretty liberal and non-religous guy, love warm weather, speak perfect English, and just want to live somewhere where I can be left the hell alone by the ruling goverment. Also I love muscle cars so no place where there's a silly extreme tax on V8s. And somewhere where they drive on the right side of the road.

So where should I move?

You should move down here to Hot Atlanta. The weather is warm to hot most of the year. There are plenty of good clubs, bars and a decent collection of international restaurants. Taco Mac is the one of the more famous chain of bars down here in the South. There are lots of room for you to drive the shit out of any V8 you choose. The suburban real estate is cheap and the Appalachian outdoor is just slightly up in the North. The area is not nearly as cultured as the North East but I doubt you are the opera-going and snail-eating kind of guy.

The Swedish goverment is in the process of doing what to me is the last straw. They are about to monitor, and store for indefinite time, ALL electronic information, plus they are about keep track of everyone using the cell phone companies and their access to our phones. Combine this with the shitty weather, extremely high taxes and generally poor attitude amongst people

So where should I move?

Traitor :p

Cheap health care/education/daycare, focus on parenting, doesn't sound so bad to me at all. Okay, so you might have no need for that now. But I can tell you, it's a relief knowing all of that is covered when you're in the middle of it.

You're young, go look for an internship in some foreign country, then go backpacking through Australia. Then form a decision on what you want out of life and what will be the best option to fulfill that. I suggest staying in the EU though, when you finally decide, cuts down on the bureaucracy considerably and you can actually travel home without going broke.
Funny, all the stuff you take up, we have hade big troubles with. Over the years our family have pretty much gotten a dump taken on us by every single instance involved with studies, social care, health care, and so on. I can count on one hand the occasions that we have been covered, the only reason the family economy is afloat is because my dad works the shit out himself to keep us that way. Glad to hear that the system works for someone but it sure as hell does not for us a lot of the time.

And in all honesty I'm back to the point I was in my teens, I really don't want any kids. I have enough trouble keeping me together that I think I might at some point be able to emotionally support a partner but I don't know I could handle raising kids, or if it's for that matter fair to keep passing on some of stuff in my genetics (it's a fun coctail, trust me).

As for what I want out of live is simple: the be able to live without fear that of some overzelaous analyst in a little room somewhere overinterprets the IM I just sent to my friend and a hour later the SWAT team storms my apartment. I simply am shocked that it has come to this.
it's mid-march here it's shorts weather
Agh, it's damned winter here still! I had my winter jacket on today and I still froze like hell!

Oh quit your whining. I've been here all winter and I expected much worse. The amount of times I used gloves or a scarf can be counted on one hand. The weather ain't bad at all. Try having rain and wind all the time.
I don't like cold, I never have.

I actually loved Atlanta when I was there in '06. Only concern I have is something I didn't let bother me at the time since I was madly in love, and that's the fact that it seems to me south is conservative and a mite religious. Perhaps that was simply the people I was around during my stay there though.

As for some added thoughts why I started this subject...it also comes down to the fact that things have been going down again over the last month. I need some kind of change and even a foolhardy and theoretical hope of moving somewhere else, to truly start anew, is a heartening thought.

It's hard to do and takes a lot of resolution and courage, but moving to a completely new place can be a good fresh start. I never felt "at home" anywhere I've lived until we moved here to Canada. This is the home I've been looking for. I've found it and I'm very, very happy.

That, and a lot of crime... not that I can talk coming from New Orleans...

I still find it hard to believe that's happening in what's supposed to be part of the free world... That country is ripe for revolution... :shifty:

For your road trip, somebody like National or Avis should be renting Camaros by that point....

Suggestions for places to live...

Northern Arizona. Low taxes, great weather (mild winters except in Flagstaff), low humidity, friendly to classic cars (you can drive them year round).

Las Vegas. Really low taxes (no income tax and low sales tax), no restrictions on alcohol consumption, restaurants and bars open all night, no shortage of things to do at 2am, fairly liberal state, mild climate (snows about once a year and doesn't exceed 115 degrees F in summer).

Yeah that's sort of what I'm feeling as well. I don't really feel like this is my true home.

Yeah that was the other thing when I was there, I got all these "don't go there, there, there, and there, or you'll get robbed"

No kidding. The amount of foul stuff our goverment has done over the last few year I'm surprised that entire riots storming the parliament has NOT broken out! And with this and some other stuff they're doing they're essentially killing the freedom for all us and endagering one or two generations to prison time because of the whims of analysts! I hope they're not planning to keep this up because soon it will be at the point of one half of the country being in prison and the other half emplyed to be prison guards!

I'm hoping for something big to put a stop to all of this, but I'm not counting on it when not a one of the parties in the parliament can be trusted even with boiling some coffee.

Actually I'm thinking that it way be cheaper to buy something solid and kind of big to drive around in for the trip and then sell it at the end of the trip. One of the reasons is it might actually be cheaper, and while I would love to rent a Camaro for it, it's just not going to work for the configuration I have planned with three guys in total going on the trip, all over 6 feet. Did check Avis though and they do have some nice alternatives (I am too smitten as well with both the Chrysler 300C and Cadillac CTS for my own good and both those can carry three tall guys pretty easily). In any case I will examine all alternatives before going.

And thanks for the suggestions there, Arizona sounds nice. Not a big fan of Vegas though, no the Casino type.

So where should I move?

Algarve, Portugal.

I'm a pretty liberal and non-religous guy
Although the country is predominantly Catholic, religion does not interfere with anything.

love warm weather
Check. You even get four seasons, with a mild winter, and 300 plus sunshine days per year.

speak perfect English
Then you'll feel quite comfortable with the increasing amount the large amount of English/Dutch/German's/assorted North Europeans, who now live in the region.

and just want to live somewhere where I can be left the hell alone by the ruling goverment.
Check.

That could be a problem. But you could always go to Germany and by your muscle there. Making the car legal in Portugal is actually cheaper then buying it here and paying all taxes - for top of the line cars of course.

And somewhere where they drive on the right side of the road.
Check.

The deep south might have a lot of sanctimonious uptight prudes but Atlanta is hardly the deep south. Trust me you are free to pursue as much hedonistic activities you want down here. Hell Elton John lives part time in the Buckhead (nicknamed Beverly Hills of the East) area of Atlanta. There are many entertainers and musicians who keeps a home in the Atlanta area. We probably have the most celebrities outside of New York and LA.

As for the point about crime. To be fair I think most major US cities have the same problem. When I moved here from the suburbs to attend university people told me exactly the same thing i.e. places to avoid, precautions to take (don't leave expensive shit like a laptop in your car), etc. And really if you heed those advices you should be fine.

I would say move to London, but it has few redeeming qualities. Bad weather, smog, noise pollution, dirt, high cost of living - are all quite difficult to overlook... but I assure you, with enough determination, it is possible to overlook all that. :p

But it's REALLY hard work, right? :p :)

Forget London! Go the extra mile and come to sunny Chelmsford! :bolian:

Who knew Democrats and NeoCons existed in that country too?

The New Mexican contingent is strong in this thread!

I'd agree with some of the others and say New Mexico if you can get in. The weather is awesome to me, if dry, and its physical make up is attractive. The above mentioned Watermelon mountains (more commonly known as the Sandia Mountains) can be partially seen from a really bad view in my avatar (there's a pretty good panorama on the wikipedia page for Albuquerque here). Albuquerque's big event every year is the Balloon Fiesta in October, it can be cool to look at (it's supposedly the most photographed annual event in the world).

Not to say it's perfect, but it is nice. A few cons (perhaps), on average there are 310 days of clear skies per year, if you're used to humidity it might be a bit of a shock, and not a whole lot of greenery around Albuquerque except by the Rio Grande. If you know Spanish, don't be deceived, it's not a big river in town.

Santa Fe is a nice quite liberal and non religious town (by American standards). It's not as cheap as Albuquerque can be, but if you really want to avoid people like me it's probably a good fit. It can feel a bit isolated if you're away from Albuquerque as there are huge expanses of open land, the cities aren't huge either. Albuquerque is about 500,000 people in the city, with maybe 200,000 in the surrounding area. Santa Fe about 80,000.

The unemployment rate is pretty good as well even now, in January 5.1% compared to the American average of 7.6%. However, if you plan to raise kids, don't believe that our public schools are good.

Politicians are the same everywhere. They're just a bit more batshit insane here.

I love how the 300C looks. Designwise it's sex on wheels with a HEMI. Sadly I haven't heard the best about it's handling which makes sense since it's more of a Sedan luxuary car then a luxuary sports car.

The CTS, especially the latest CTS-V is fantastic. If ever needed a sports sedan and had the dough, CTS-V it is. And the regular CTS with the VVT DI 3.6 V6 (same as in the Camaro) wouldn't be too bad either.

Wow...that pic of the mountains...just wow.

I'd say clear skies is definetly not a bad thing, have had enough clouds in Sweden to last me a life time. Lack of greenery might take some getting used to.

In short it's sounding better and better for New Mexico.

I was being facetious. If some jackass politician tried that here, we'd have an armed revolt.

Before anyone starts, Dubya using the Patriot Act to tap the phones of suspicious Arab immigrants is not even close to being the same.
