Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Before

Samuel T. Cogley

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So what's it going to be?

The original: "Where no man has gone before..."

TNG: "Where no one has gone before..."

Will it even be mentioned at all?

I was just reading the fine print (lawyer) over at the official site:

http://www.startrekmovie.com/

And it says:

Synopsis: From director J.J. Abrams (“Mission: Impossible III,” “Lost” and “Alias”) and screenwriters Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman (“TRANSFORMERS,” “MI: III”) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, “Star Trek,” featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no man has gone before. (emphasis mine)

Of course, this could just be promotional material that will have no bearing on the final product.

Now personally, I don't really care. I think I'd prefer to stick with "man" just because that's the original quote, and the one most people associate with Star Trek. But, if they changed it to "one", I'd be fine with that.

A lot of textbooks are swinging the other way and using "she/her" as the default, instead of the old "he/him" default, when the gender in question could be either a man or a woman.

In that vein, what if we get "Where no woman has gone before"?, just to stick with the trend.

Again, it doesn't really matter to me. But I'm bored out of my mind and I'm wondering what others might think.

Thoughts?

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

I'll go with the Futurama version -

"Where No Fan Has Gone Before"

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

Since it's a reboot, shouldn't it be "Where everyone has gone before"?

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

How about "Where no canon has gone before" (there's that bad word again).

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

Should fit in, right next to "It’s just that I can't get used to having a woman on the bridge."

Yeah, that'll work.

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

"Where Rick Berman Can't Go Anymore"

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

"Where no man has gone before"

Screw political correctness.

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

Well, grammatically speaking I always took the man in "where no man" phrase to be used in the sense of mankind, which does include both genders. The switch to "no one" kind of irritated me as it smacked of needless PC crap.

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

"Where No Politically Correct Citizen Has Gone Before"

Actually, "Mankind" cannot be pluralized, so you would not say "where no man has gone...", becuase than that would be the same as saying "where no mankind has...".
Saying "no man" assumes you could say the inverse, which would be "where many men have gone before"...but then again you cannot say "where many mankinds have gone before"

So to be gramatically correct you must say:
"Where Man* has not Gone Before"

*meaning 'Mankind'

Aww screw it -- that sucks. Let's just stick to the TOS version, or I'll even settle for the TNG version.

"That's one small film for man, one giant blockbuster for mankind"

Oh wait, wrong line.

How do we know it's not, "Where no man has gone before," because a woman has already been there?

Well for what it's worth, in TUC, Kirk said, "...where no man, where no one, has gone before."

And, for what it's worth, how about making it, "To go boldly....," too? Just to tidy everything up. ;)

What? We've split the atom, but you don't want us splitting infinitives? ;)

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

I'm thinking "man," and I'm thinking we don't hear it 'til the end of the film.

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

"Where no bro has gone before".

Makes it more "accessible to the youth market".

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

As this movie appears to be somewhat Spock-centric, I predict it will now be:

"Where no Vulcanian* has gone before"

* Spock will be referred to as Vulcanian in this film in order to adhere to canon.

Re: Where No Man/Woman/One/Broad/Dame/Skirt/Chick/Sombrero Has Gone Be

Since the "in universe" origin of the quote was from Zefram Cochrane, I don't think there's any problem using the "man" version.

Besides, a woman's place is on the homeworld.

"Where no Vulcan has gone in time before"
