Where have all the yeomen gone?

You realize secretaries are still a thing and are predominantly women?
And you realize the position of yeoman in the military has largely been filled by males? Indeed, even in TOS, though all the yeomen we see are female, there's an implication that they're usually male given both Pike and Kirk voice disdain over being assigned a female yeoman.

...and all other positions in the military are also largely filled by males. I wonder why?
<answer: % women / % men = 17.3% / 82.7%>
Take a look at how big an increase there has been in the last 50 years (about a 400% increase) and extrapolate that forward another 300 years.

I still maintain that you could frame Pike's remark as being more like "you (definitely) aren't him", as opposed to "you aren't a man". It's like if a child has been taught by the same familiar teacher for 3 grades in a row, and the next year, their new teacher has a totally different look and personality. It's always hard to get used to someone new, whose quirks and habits and likes and dislikes you don't know.

In Rand's first appearance in Corbonite Maneuver Kirk and Bones both call her a "female yeoman" as if they were surprised though, so the implication seemed to be that it was not common practice. But then all the later TOS yeoman were women too so IDK.

AND: Excuse me, sir. It's past time you had something to eat, sir.
KIRK: What the devil is this? Green leaves?
RAND: It's dietary salad, sir. Doctor McCoy ordered your diet card changed. I thought you knew.
MCCOY: Your weight was up a couple of pounds, remember?
KIRK: Will you stop hovering over me, Yeoman?
RAND: Well, I'll change it if you don't like it, sir.
KIRK: Bring some for the doctor, too.
MCCOY: No, no. No, I never eat until the crew eats.
KIRK: Thank you, Yeoman.
RAND: You're welcome, sir. (leaves)

KIRK: When I find the headquarters genius that assigned me a female yeoman
MCCOY: What's the matter, Jim. Don't you trust yourself?
KIRK: I've already got a female to worry about. Her name's the Enterprise.

Kirk seems more put out by Rand's motherly fussing over him to eat his diet salad, implying that a man wouldn't have been so insistent. McCoy implies Kirk doesn't trust himself not to do something; presumably, be attracted to her and attempt a relationship, even though it's clear he found her actions annoying, not cute.

That, and Kirk hugging Rand in Balance of Terror are my favourite Kirk/Rand interactions. I found the overt crying and confrontation over the top. Kirk overreacts because he fancies Rand and McCoy spots it straight away. Keeping their relationship on that level for longer and having Enemy Within and Miri in the second half of season one would have worked better IMO. Helen Noel made more sense storywise but could have been a cool way to draw a line under the Rand attraction, tainting the whole thing with false memories.
