Where Does It Rank?

Well, TFA is definitely above AOTC (obvious statement is obvious). Is it a more consistent movie than both ROTJ & TPM, though? It certainly doesn't (yet) hold the emotional impact of those two films, much less ANH, ROTS, and ESB.

In terms of favorites (at the moment):

1. ROTS
2. ESB
3. ANH
4. TPM
5. ROTJ
6. TFA

7. AOTC

In terms of filmmaking quality:

1. ESB
2. ANH
3. TFA
4. ROTS
5. TPM
6. ROTJ
7. AOTC
Whilst I don't agree with your lists, differentiating between 'Favourite' and 'Film Quality' is an important distinction so...

Favourite

1. Return of the Jedi
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Force Awakens
4. Revenge of the Sith
5. A New Hope
6. Attack of the Clones
7. The Phantom Menace

Film Quality

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi
4. The Force Awakens
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Attack of the Clones
7. The Phantom Menace

This may seem like sacrilege, but in terms of objective movie quality, Force Awakens may in fact be better than A New Hope. Are we not supposed to take into account things that naturally evolve over time, like production values, special effects, complexity of character? I mean, the settings feel so much more real in Force Awakens than in New Hope. The stormtroopers feel like realer people. Kylo Ren is a more complex and interesting villain than the Darth Vader of A New Hope (Vader didn't gain his true awesomeness until Empire. The genius Vader costume does not exclusively make the character.) The structure of the scenes, and particularly the "action" scenes, is more fluid in Force Awakens. The action scenes don't feel like distinct "set pieces" in Force Awakens, as they do in A New Hope, because they're integrated into the narrative with more sophistication. So, if we were not to disqualify elements that are almost inevitable due to the progression of filming techniques since the 70's, Force Awakens may actually be a better movie than the original.

It does, however, fall below A New Hope in one quality that could never be helped - originality. It isn't the first. And, for that reason, people will likely never see Force Awakens as better than New Hope. But I think, really, originality aside, Force Awakens may be a better-made film.

Return of the Jedi is hard to place, because much of it is utter crap, except that the Luke/Darth/Palpatine stuff is brilliant. Is Return of the Jedi a better film than Revenge of the Sith? I've never decided. Sith is more poorly made, but it has emotional weight almost due to elements outside of the film's ability to ruin.

So...no list, I guess. Obviously, Phantom and Clones are far at the bottom. Empire and Force Awakens are probably the best. A New Hope perhaps deserves a place alongside it for being the first. Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi fight for the mediocre middle.

Right now (after one viewing), The Force Awakens would probably rank third for me behind Empire... and A New Hope.

While it has its flaws, there is a magic in The Force Awakens that is sorely lacking from the prequels and I think it is simply a better movie than Return of the Jedi.

I have to agree. It easily takes third place, ahead of Jedi. If Jedi went from the end of the Jabba/rescue Han straight into the battle, taking out the Ewok parts it would have been a much better film.

ESB
ANH

[Empty Spaces]

TFA/ROTJ/ROTS

[Empty Spaces]

TPM
AOTC

*ANH is still my personal favorite, but Empire is such an artistic masterpiece.

Nearly impossible for me to rank. It does many things far better than the prequels, but other things so much worse. It's below ANH and ESB, that's for sure, but beyond that I'm at a complete loss where to place it.

I'm honestly surprised people are ranking ANH so high. I liked it as a kid but even then I thought the final battle never got close to the emotional impact of the personal confrontations in ESB and ROTJ (and now TFA). In fact the whole movie feels pretty bland to me these days. I rewatched it last week and even the colors and lighting felt bland to me.

Empire changed that completely for me. It's almost like you can rank the movies by how much input Lucas had.

Or little, though perhaps it would be more accurate to say how much of the words in the script were written bu Lucas'

ANH probably ranks so high due to a "nostalgia" factor.

Here's a new take on my rankings:

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
The Force Awakens
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
The Holiday Special
The Phantom Menace.

Wait, you rated the Holiday Special at all? I know people look down on the Phantom Menace, but even the harshest critic would probably put Jar Jar over that mess of a special.

:techman:

Though I give Lucas a lot of kudos for seceding those creative elements in sequels - I always suspected it was because he knew his limitations.

Bringing in new directors, cinematographers and writers with a fresh eye - as well as a cast more familiar with their characters - made for a winning combination.

Shame he went back into uber-control freak mode with the prequels. I sooo hoped he'd let loose again after the TPM, but not to be...

Well, Obi-Wan and Vader did have a personal confrontation in ANH. They also have more history than Vader and Luke had in Empire. However, I agree for the most part, but only because the first film was a simple "rescue the princess from the castle" story set in space. It set up the universe, but was never meant to lead into future films. So it always felt somewhat disconnected for me from the last two films. I still love the original, but agree it is the least emotional or visually interesting of the original films.

Off topic, but did anybody see the parody video of JJ Abrams giving his opinion on the prequels?

Is The Holiday Special one of those it's so bad it's good type things? I mean is it as bad as say, Galactica 1980 where you watch it because you're curious on how bad it really is?
