Where did 'Spot' come from?

Spot even made it to the big screen.

Twice. :) Although its almost a blink-and-you'll-miss-her cameo in Nemesis, and only then being cradled by B-4 (no scenes with Data).

How old would Spot be at that point?

Depends on how old Spot was when we first saw her. ;)

Then again, "she" was a "he" up until Season Six, not to mention the first Spot was a completely different breed of cat, so chances are we're talking about various different felines who all just happen to share the same name.

The orange Tabby in Nemesis is not actually named on-screen, so we're only left to assume by the breed and the color that it's Spot, and further assume that it's the same Spot last seen in Generations. But I guess there's no way of knowing for certain. :)

Spot had a very important job on the Enterprise. He/she kept the tribble population in check.

it was one of the 'funniest moments' not one of the 'great moments'. When I think of great TNG moments, I think of "Captain Jean-Luc Picard, you lead the strongest ship of the Federation fleet. You speak for your people."
"I have nothing to say to you! And I will resist you with my last ounce of strength!"
"Strength is irrelevant. Resistance is futile. We wish to improve ourselves. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service ours."
"Impossible! My culture is based on freedom and self-determination!"
"Freedom is irrelevant. Self-determination is irrelevant. You must comply."
"We would rather die!"
"Death is irrelevant. Your archaic cultures are authority-driven. To facilitate our introduction into your societies, it has been decided that a human voice will speak for us in all communications. You have been chosen to be that voice."

I always thought the writing staff missed a great opportunity to establish Spot as Dr. Soong's cat, and that Data had to take the animal back with him to the Enterprise after Soong died.

Thinking about it more now, the final draft of "Data's Day" was being written just as "Brothers" aired. They could have conceivably shot some 2nd Unit inserts of Spot sitting on a table in Soong's lab or something, watching Soong and Data talk in their earlier scenes. Then maybe another cutaway of the cat running off frightened when Lore starts throwing stuff around... and finally a shot of the cat licking Soong's hand as he dies.

This would have perfectly established the cat, so that when you see him in "Data's Day" you go, "Hey! Data adopted the cat!" :)

In answer to the OP's question: I don't know.

But this thread seems the best place to confess that when I was watching TNG when it first aired, I swore Data named his cat, "Spock." Upon finding out it was in fact "Spot," I was severely disappointed.

Spot!!!! The greatest character in all of Star Trek!!

Some say that Spock, or Seven, or Picard, or some other such nonsense represents the true essence and spirit of Trek...they are wrong. SPOT is the definition of Trek. Picard may be the voice of humanity, but Spot is the voice of felinity, and therefore the strongest, most independent, and freedom-loving voice ever to exist.

MEOW!

Great ideas. We need more Spot! My hope is that he/she appears in a future Trek film/TV show in a borgified state (why wouldn't they want to assimilate cats??), and we are witness to his tumultuous yet triumphant transformation back into the great feline he/she once was.

Spot was still an infant during the show, his mother was in Final Frontier, she's the one Kirk threw on the "pool" table.

:)

Data's dark secret!

The reason Spot kept changing appearance and even gender is, that Data was exceptionally bad at taking care of cats. It actually was different cats with him naming all of them Spot and pretending.... nothing... happened.:p

That makes sense (for the kittens too sadly).

Or... Data simply didn't look... and found out Spot's gender when giving the cat a tummy rub. :alienblush: It does happen...

Did Data actually name his own cat, do we think?

Because for all protestations that Data does not articulate emotion, naming a Tabby cat 'Spot' is definitely a sign of somebody with a firm grasp of sardonic irony. :D

Wow, I missed Spot's cameo in Nemesis. What scene was she in? On a side note, if I get an orange tabby cat (which I doubt I would since I'm partial to Russian Blues), I would name him / her Spot!

My last cat was a Russian Blue and her name was Spot. I lost her a year ago, but she was awesome. I'm glad you brought it up :)

I'm pretty sure that's what my cat told me that when I brought her home from the Humane Society.
