Any spin that can transcend Harry Kim's narrative thread in BEFORE & AFTER is a fair start to saving this episode. And one that is - otherwise - very sweet, in its own way. The active interest that the bridge crew have in helping Kes throughout, regardless of what crisis the ship's facing, or any of that. She matters to them ... to all of them. She belongs and is genuinely cared about. Even Janeway takes her under her wing and acts as her sort of Play Mum. And so out of that world, here's her daughter Linnis troubled with a pernicious suitor in Harry Kim. The idea that the Paris Family might've been humouring Harry as the sperm donor to Linnis' child actually works - it fits the character(s), it fits the situation. I like it ... I'll buy it!

I think I might adopt that as my headcanon. It's still a bit weird but more acceptable.

That was my understanding too. Especially since he and Linnis didn't seem particularly affectionate to one another too (compare them to Tom/Kes in those scenes and you'll see what I mean) To me they were two friends who had a child together.
For the poll, I also voted Ocampan style too. It just makes sense to me.

Oh, Harry and Linnis are a gross couple, absolutely. Harry was probably her godfather, he definitely watched her grow up. It's incredibly creepy and I never could look at Harry the same way after this.
It also makes me sad that Kes got so close to Andrew, and actually remembers giving birth to Linnis and yet they never existed. I'd think it would be kind of like a death to lose people to non existence like this. Of course, Voyager didn't have the freedom to really explore something like that with an episodic format.

Ocampa are like fruit flies that live for a day. They grow fast, learn fast, love fast and die fast.

What a wasted opportunity for Kes and Jennifer Lien, in how VOY could've really explored, over the course of the entire series, the aging process. We'd see her relationships changing based on that, alone. Much more interesting, actually, would be watching the EMH's attempts at extending her Life. Sort of a Search for the Holy Grail, kind of an attitude. Being so youthful, herself, it makes me wonder how Lien would interpret and colour Kes' attitudes towards her own aging. A lot of Human Drama, there.

Oh no your right the idea of a short lived elves in space is truly fascinating. If you have that short a lifespan then the way you act and think and love and behave would most certainly be greatly affected. Voyager's writers didn't think that through.

Oh, most definitely. And in so-doing, VOY Fans lost out on some really novel ideas and story approaches. Seven's take-over of the show never trouched on any of that kind of potential. She was all hype! Another Outsider Searching for Their Lost Humanity. That's OK, for a start, but ... STAR TREK had kind of 'been there,' and not too long before VOY came out, even. Even though Jeri Ryan took over the show, as the de facto main star ... Seven, as a character was short-changed, too. A lot of missed opportunities, in favour of short-term ratings ...

I've always said this too. I think it would have been great to see, an opportunity for some grea drama. She would be dealing with her own aging and impending deah whole those around her are basically not aging. I've always said i found her short lifespan an interesting thing and the only unique thing about her

And all because the network (it was the network's choice, right), they had to get rid of someone. I know I've read somewhere Garret Wang was being considered, but some magazine article voted him on a list of attractive people. Honestly, I wouldn't have wanted any of them to be let go from the show.

Jennifer Lien's acting talent wasn't up to chops though I'd say she strained badly in Warlord and other than that played a very one note character.

Seven for better or worse saved the show was she brought on for T&A yes but her acting chops made it work.

Your perception is correct. Both avatars inspired by conversations you and I have typed out on this very site! My signature, of course is "It Takes Two." So, I like using couples in my avatars, both real ... and fictitious ... to tie it all together. In Stargate, Mili Avital's Sha'uri is so impossibly beautiful and she's so completely devoted to Daniel that the combination of those qualities really appeals to me.

Then, you tell me about this Zorro series I've never heard of, before ... and what do I find? Zorro, with his cowl on, as a gimmicky way to draw ratings, kissing up on this sweet beauty played by Patrice Martinez. Quite aside from his attention-grabbing garb, though, he's pretty good in a fight ... and an expert swordsman. He's Tough ... yet Tender ... qualities which exemplify Yours Truly. So, I may yet find myself becoming a fan of this series. All of the necessary ingredients are there ...

I agree. Kes already moved from the awed newbie to competent crew member in the two years she was on Voyager. It would have been great to see her growing up and older and how it affected her and everyone around. Like someone else said in another thread, it would have been a pretty great opportunity to see Kes and Seven together on the ship too. I can easily imagine Kes teaching Seven how to open up and find her humanity. In return Seven could offer something unique to Kes as well.
