Where did Badass Captain Robau start

I think it was jokes about wanting a four digit registry so adding a preceding zero...because he was so badass

Back when it was announced that Faran Tahir would be playing Robau, there were some interviews about the character. In the interviews, comparisons were made to other Starfleet captains in previous movies, who were often portrayed as incompetant so that the hero captain (Kirk or Picard) could look more awesome. Captain Harriman in Generations is an excellent example of this. However, this is not what the case with Robau. He was described in some interviews as being a competant and capable officer and a "badass captain." So with this, folks began referring to him as the "Badass Captain Robau." I've taken the title and made numerous jokes on the matter, as have others.

To be fair, the point that was being made wasn't specific to Robau. I believe it was stated that to be a Captain in Starfleet meant you had to be a badass - i.e., all captains in Starfleet are supposed to be badass (because only the best make it and are put in charge).

Here's the quote from Orci about the 'Federation Captain' which started things:

TrekMovie.com: One of the reported characters is a ‘Federation Captain’ was that Pike or just another captain?

Roberto Orci: It was not necessarily Pike. One of the things we are trying to do in this movie is introduce a general audience to Starfleet. Captain Kirk was not the only captain in Starfleet.

TrekMovie.com: That brings up a bit of a pet peeve of mine with previous Trek films. So often other captains were set up as patsies - like Harriman in Generations or Styles from Search for Spock. Perhaps it was a way to make Kirk look good, but it made it look like he was almost a fluke and the rest were losers.

Roberto Orci: Ya I totally agree with you and we don’t have that. Being a captain in Starfleet should be a special position and we don’t feel that another captain has to be diminished in order to elevate Captain Kirk. If you are a captain in Starfleet you are a cool mother f—er.

Not just in the movies, how about Decker, Tracey and Garth? They all went off the deep end.

Not to metion that guy on the Roman planet.

Captain Merrik.
But he wasn't Starfleet; he was just a weenie who washed out of the Academy and wound up in the Merchant Fleet.

I also recall a question asking whether Spock would be a badass, as well as a thread about Badass Romulan Ink (Nero's tattoos.) There has been an undercurrent of badass flowing beneath much discussion of this movie for the better part of the last year.

I actually noticed about a month ago when I did a search for "badass captain robau" on Google that Orci and the other Cohorts use the term "badass" quite a bit for this movie. Captain Robau is badass. Kirk is badass. Nero is a badass villain. Sulu is badass. The movie in general is badass.

So I guess the term isn't exclusive to Robau, but there is something about saying "The Badass Captain Robau" that is so cool that you start looking for excuses to use it. Badass Captain Robau. Badass Captain Robau. Badass Captain Robau.

Yes, it is a helluva thing to say. Has a great ring to it. However, it could have a positive or negative connotation. Overheard at a five-star restaurant" Yes, I'll have another glass of that Badass Captain Robau." Nice. Or "No, Willy canna come out and play, he gots a case of the Badass Captain Robau." Not so nice.

I think that you have hit here upon a fundamental truth.
