Where are the real high quality ST fan productions?

I was watching I.M.P.S. The Relentless the other day and the thought came to me there should be something of this calibre from the ST community... but as far as I know there isn't, or at least I've never heard of it.

Hell even 40K has excellent fanmade stuff... check out Damnatus if you can.

ST fannery really should be living up to that. It's kinda dissapointing.

I've never been keen on fan productions. I enjoyed some of Star Trek: Phase II (as it's now known) though.

Of Gods and Men may boast impressive sets and casting, but the story is mostly atrocious and the direction is even worse. Aside from an interesting performance from Walter Koenig and a few gee whiz fanwanky moments, there's not much that I'd call "high quality" in it.

Starship Exeter, Starship Farragut, Star Trek Intrepid, Phase II, and the later years of Hidden Frontier ... those are your best bets (right now anyway) for high quality fan films.

If you can do audio drama fan fiction (essentially radio plays/audio fan films), Darker Projects has a few series released as well, in particular Star Trek: The Section 31 Files and Star Trek: Lost Frontier are well done.

I would say the only truly high quality fanfilms (to date) are Phase II and Farragut (and maybe Phoenix). None of the rest of us have anywhere near the kind of resources to match up to them.

That isn't a bash on any other fanfilm. I think there are many out there that do fantastic work with minimal resources, but the production quality just isn't up to the same level for most of us.

I think Exeter would fit in to that category as well, once "The Tressaurian Intersection" is complete. It already does in my opinion, but I understand the desire to have it done.

You're right, don't know how I managed to omit Exeter from the list. Doh!

And of course, if anyone wants to throw some money in the direction of some of those 'disappointing' fanfilms, be my guest. Since in a lot of cases money is likely the major barrier to the sort of high quality you may be looking for.

YMMV of course. :)

I think it's limited to those two (or three, with Exeter) only if one's defining "high quality" in terms of the scope of working with full sets and so forth - I say that because it's the one thing that the productions mentioned so far really have in common. I'd definitely put Starship Intrepid in there for acting, writing, overall premise and attention to detail. And many of the production values, like costuming and CG are good as well.

Also not a fan of Of Gods And Men, mainly for reasons doubleohfive has listed, and which many of the participants will be quick to tell you isn't really a fan production.

I guess that depends on the definition of "high quality". I found I.M.P.S. The Relentless, an empty showcase of endless CGI shots that bored me to tears.

I kind of feel like poking fun at you a la Shelby v. Hunter now. :D

Amen to that!

There is also an alternative, which is to go the audio drama route. Giant Gnome is doing a great job with Star Trek: Outpost, Darker Projects has done some extremely good work and of course, I wouldn't live it down if I didn't mention Star Trek: Excelsior, which is a finalist for a Parsec Award. We have our strengths and weaknesses, of course, however the audio medium allows you to employ the theater of the mind, where as those of us in radio always liked to say, the pictures are better (than TV).

And for once I actually deserve it. :)

Exeter's definitely on that list, I think my brain must have melted. :)

And thanks for the kind words. You know I wasn't fishing for compliments, right? :) For what it's worth, no one's more aware of (or more frustrated by) Intrepid's shortcomings than I am.

Thirded. I was fine with the direction, and the production standards were very good, but I thought the writing was less than stellar.

I didn't think you were fishing - but I knew you're too modest to plug your own project as among the best, and Intrepid deserves it.

^^ Agreed with Dennis. Star Trek: Intrepid deserves to be on that list as much as any of the others mentioned.

I still get a great belly laugh out of the "Slowpoke" remark at the beginning of (I think?) Operation: Beta Shield.

You guys really hit it out of the park with the interaction between those two characters.
