Finding myself slowing down a bit though. I think I need to give myself a kick in the pants.

I wrote a short story some years ago in which my main character would break the fourth wall and tell me how I was writing him wrong and what he would actually do in that situation. It didn't work too well since I wasn't sure how to "rewrite the scene" so to speak.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who actually feels like the characters are completely autonomous.
My MC wasn't going to have a love interest either. But when I was stuck I decided to write a "hanging out with" my alien MC scene and my goodness what I learned about them. Suddenly I've got an understanding of my alien culture, turns out my alien MC is a single father and his father is an artisan. Also learned that my human MC is actually finally grieving the loss of her beloved father.
I'm having all kinds of "whoa!" going on here. But it's interesting, very, very interesting to just let the characters reveal themselves to me rather than having it all figured out.![]()
Well, I'm now at 31,400 words and really close to my personal halfway point of 35,000 words! I never expected to make such rapid progress, but I guess that is what being unemployed does to me.![]()
