I'm bowing out for the rest of the month. It has been a difficult decision, but with working, looking for a job and getting the new apartment straight, I haven't sat down at the computer for five straight days. There is no way I'm going to catch up so I will make a plan to outline for next year and place what I have for this year's entry into my SWIP (Stalled Works In Progress) drawer.
15662. Been really finding myself inspired today, and as a result, I got my best daily wordcount. Had some unexpected things happen, however. My characters went and visited a friend of one of my characters, who ended up being a senile grumpy fellow who was really off his rocker and tried to attack his friend. As a result, one of my characters accidentally killed him. In the process however, while I didn't plan it, it actually gave my story a boost and a bit of added urgency and actually helped me find a reason for something that happens later on. That's the fun part in all this. Your characters live in the pages, and when you least expect it, your characters could do something totally unexpected. As a result, I surprised myself as a writer.

Owain -- I snickered when I read your post. I had something similar happen to me (no killings)... but I was stuck, so I decided to skip to a later scene and honestly one that I was never planning on writing. 3500 words later, I've got some major character depth that I didn't have before. And they surprised the heck out of me too.
All told, with about 3 days of little to no writing in the last 7 days, I'm at 14,385. I could have written more too, but my eyes are getting droopy. At least I have something to look forward to tomorrow!

Thanks, Star. Perhaps trying this just after moving was a bad idea, but I do have an original science fiction spec. to work on which I hope will be publishable once written. I have written one shorter one which is in the Jim Baen competition, and this current one, both set in the same universe.

Haha, yeah, I'm loving it, Star. Sometimes one can really surprise oneself. My Dad told me about something he heard on the radio from a writer who said that each day, she likes to check in with her characters and see what they want to do, so I've been doing that and it's lead me into interesting directions.
Yesterday my characters were pleading me to visit a museum, so I got them ready and along the way, we stopped at a character's friend/rival. I had no idea how to write this friend, but he turned out to be a senile fellow who was very rude and brash and who jumped one of my characters, and in defence, another of my characters went to stun him with a spell, but used too much focus, killing him in the process. Oops. Didn't foresee that, but it added a bit of urgency, and as such, they never went to the museum and they're skipping out of town after law enforcement finds the body. Yay for wandering minds! It's a steampunk story of magic vs technology, and one wizard family was vising the technological lands, and the mother of this family was the one to accidentally kill. Fun. Now they're heading back home in a train. Or so they think....

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who actually feels like the characters are completely autonomous.
My MC wasn't going to have a love interest either. But when I was stuck I decided to write a "hanging out with" my alien MC scene and my goodness what I learned about them. Suddenly I've got an understanding of my alien culture, turns out my alien MC is a single father and his father is an artisan. Also learned that my human MC is actually finally grieving the loss of her beloved father.
I'm having all kinds of "whoa!" going on here. But it's interesting, very, very interesting to just let the characters reveal themselves to me rather than having it all figured out.

I wrote a short story some years ago in which my main character would break the fourth wall and tell me how I was writing him wrong and what he would actually do in that situation. It didn't work too well since I wasn't sure how to "rewrite the scene" so to speak.
That's why NaNo is awesome. You don't need to rewrite anything!

Yeah, exactly. It's fun like that, because when it does, it tends to all fall into place. I think we have our subconciousness to thank for that

My main character is going to try to get rid of the coyote.

Well, I'm now at 31,400 words and really close to my personal halfway point of 35,000 words! I never expected to make such rapid progress, but I guess that is what being unemployed does to me.
