Where are all the real fans???

I see two kinds, the honestly confused newbies just trying to figure things out, and the other kind just looking for an argument.

I am happy to help the former who are asking questions in good faith, the latter suddenly and mysteriously disappear from my sight.

Where have all the real fans gone
And where are all the nerds?
Where's the continuity wise canonista
To fight with excessive words?
Isn't there an expert to type on fiery keys
Late at night, I toss and I turn
And I dream of what I need
I need a real fan
I'm holding out for a real fan who knows warp's faster than light.
They gotta know Kirk, and gotta know Spock
And they gotta know who beat a Gorn in a fight
I need a real fan
I'm holding out for a real fan 'til the morning light
They gotta be sure, and it's gotta be soon
And they gotta know that they're right.
Larger than life
Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fanfic fantasy
Somewhere, just beyond my reach
There's someone who agrees with me.

Obviously not a real fan there.

It is strange reading comments from people who are fans saying they are not.

I don't understand why real real fans have allowed the term real fan to be hijacked by an intolerant few.

Because "fan" alone is sufficient. The term "real fan" implies the existence the "fake fans" or at least that some fans are more "real" than others.

Nobody is saying that they're not fans.

I'm a huge fan of Battlestargate Trek Wars Galactica 5.
Is that the one that stars the guy from Castle and The Rookie?

Where is my James Dixon?
Where are my canon chronologies?
Where are my Treknical manuals?
Where have all the True Fans gone?

It's always seemed to me that it was more of a parallel to the hardcore gamer vs casual gamer fight you see in MMORPGs.

Excellent filksong. "Filk" is the word "folk" with a typo that happened decades ago, and the fannish community at that time adopted it as a real word to describe songs about SF/F shows, books, movies, fandom, and science.

Gordon Dickson (best known for the Dorsai series of military SF) wrote filksongs. So did Poul Anderson, and a number of other well-known authors.

What's nice for me here is that I've just gotten into Merlin (the BBC version that was canceled a dozen years ago). I recognized the song used in the Trek filk here because there are a couple of Merlin-themed fan videos of it on YouTube (one is about the characters in general, and there's one dedicated to Lancelot).
