When you were a child

There's a lot of Space Faring dreamers here. Just a question for everyone. Did Star Trek influence you in anyway (We are on a Trek message board after all) or was it something else. Perhaps if you're older it was the Moon landing in 69, but just what was your influence, if you had any.

I noticed a lot of posters mentioned astronaut too. And a lot mentioned archeologist, which i find interesting!

I did say astronaut and Star Trek and the moon landing DID play a big part in that dream. I'd still go up in a ship if they offered me the job...at the drop of a hat.

I wanted to be retired when I grew up. Seriously.

My goals haven't much changed. I'm just trying to figure out what I'd like do in the meantime to get there.

I wanted to be a jewelery designer, then I wanted to be a poet, then in my teens I wanted to be a diplomat, then I wanted to be a journalist. Now that I'm all grown up, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!

I forgot about the connection between Archeology and Star Trek, and Picard is my favorite of the captains. That's a shame on me.

I have to honestly say...making music and having fans is something I always wanted...when I was in various bands it was great even though my band mates were short sighted and didn't want to work on making the music better. Playing live is awesome and having people listen to you and love what you do is even better. I feel I am too old(32) to pursue music...but nothing would bring me greater joy than to make music and to perform...I truly love it...which is strange cause I don't like attention and being in front of an audience...but as soon as the music starts...I have never felt more at peace and comfortable...creating something and having someone else love it is a blessing. :)

^you are never too old to pursue a career in the music industry. there are plenty of people over 60 that still tour. go for it!

I wanted to be an astronaut back in the sixties and seventies, then I wanted to follow in my old man's footsteps and be an architect. I even took drafting classes in school, but once they started throwing letters and funky symbols into the math I just didn't get it. then it was a career in music. I gave that a shot, but after several years my hands would no longer cooperate. :( even if I could still play, I'm not sure I would've survived in the industry for long.

off topic: Miss Chicken, your avatar just cracks me up. please don't ever change it!

Why in the world would you think that? There's no age limit on artistic expression. Go for it. There's nothing stopping you from sharing your creations with the world in the age of the Internet. :bolian:

Actually, I just realized that my youngest Brother just turned 32 last month and he's still making music. He's given up on bands and going solo, because he wants all the creative control and he feels it's too hard to depend on others.

It is...even with people you are close with...there has to be a great deal of compromise...which can be hard for some artist.

I just feel it would be too hard and I am not even in a place where I could do it right now. :(

You've got a computer, Audacity is free, there are places where you can upload your music or video files for free-- the only thing I'm not sure you have is a microphone, which is not expensive.

Here is what my Brother did with not much more than that.

We want to hear your stuff. ;)

(By the way, yes, I took that picture  )

^
Actually I need a certain piece of software to create music...once I have that...I can pretty much do the rest easily.

I will be doing a mix of electronica and death metal...not sure you'd wanna hear it.

Ur Bro sounds good. :bolian:

Thanks. :) I think he's very good. He's been getting more Folksy lately; he was into Grunge when he was younger.

As for what I want to hear, I like a great variety of things. And I'm always interested in my peeps' creative endeavors.

Making music and performing has always been a dream of mine...be great to get back into it. :)

Oups! I confused you with another board member. Apologies. :alienblush:
It's okay no worries. I'm assuming it's trekkiedane because I confuse myself with him all the time
Yep. :D

I don't think Star Trek was an influence for me in particular, but science-fiction in general definitively was.

Astronomy for me is more about understanding the nature of the universe than stargazing on a summer night. I'm way more fascinated by the equations and the models of evolution than by pretty pictures of stars and planets. Using Q's words (and I might shoot my argument in the foot using a Star Trek reference, but I did choose my path long before that particular episode ), it's not about "mapping stars and studying nebula, but charting the unknown possibility of existence". Doing my (tiny wee) part in adding to the general knowledge of the human race is the best thing I think I can do with my life.
