When you put it like that...

You sit in a metal box that moves you to a small patch of rock somewhat distant from that which you normally crawl around on. You sustain yourself at that new location until the rock completes 14 rotations, and then you move back to where you started.

I can't figure out what this one is.

Small pieces of crystallized carbon are considered very valuable.

You know what woke me up to the utter hypocrisy of the diamond industry? An episode of Law & Order, if you can believe it.

Diamonds are only valuable because 1) the conglomerate and the ad campaigns ("Diamonds are forever" ) say they are, and 2) Said conglomerate has warehouses full of diamonds which they are just sitting on, intentionally keeping them from ever making it into the market, because if they do, the value will go down to nothing.

Also, diamonds are responsible for a whole lot of death. Think about that the next time you put on a ring or a necklace.

Then that's another weird thing -- the cartel could simply burn the surplus to make them more scarce.

ETA: not exactly "forever".

It's weird that you can go to the beach and see women willingly exhibit clothing (bikinis) that reveal the same ammount if not more of their body than their underwear does,an article of clothing which is customary to be shy about.

THAT'S the one that confuses me the most.

How about: a female wearing a garment specifically designed to uplift two portions of her anatomy, wearing a covering garment that is specifically designed and specifically worn by the female to show quite well to any onlooker the effect of the first garment, and the the female is upset because a male onlooker is...well, looking on?

You have forgotten to mention that they're also sparkly. Yes, yes I know about the rest but sometimes we simply like sparkly things. And showing off. Never underestimate the desire of an individual to show off a symbol of wealth to other individuals.

People wear fake fur, why not fake diamonds? They're sparkly. :p

As for the desire to show off wealth: I'm well aware of it. Doesn't mean I can't do my part to eradicate it. ;)
