when will this song die?

Actually, its "What I like about you".

And it's called the mute button, or changing the channel, or just getting over it.

Back in the late 80's, it was by far my preferred song to request if I wanted to have a dance in the bar/disco after a night of ten-pin bowling.

It sounds much better after a couple of drinks.

Two others that drive me batty: Anytime there's a new cheeseburger they seem to use "I'll Melt With You" and lately I'm sick to death of the Swiffer ads with Player's "Baby Come Back" all over them.

I find it especially distasteful because I liked Modern English back in the day. Also irritating to me is any commercial making use of "This is the Day" by The The. Seriously, The The whoring Dockers is not amusing. It's downright hilarious in an evil kind of way.

And I'm well aware of the mute button, and use it judiciously.

Given the enormous number of songs being licensed to companies for commercials these days, I find it refreshing that the former drummer for The Doors has single-handedly prevented any songs from that band's catalogue from being used for commercial purposes.

It apparently dates to a 1966 agreement among the band members that every member could veto any business decision. So for years now the two other surviving members have been trying to sell "Light My Fire" and other songs for corporate use, but the drummer has vetoed the decision time and time again. He wrote an article about it a few years ago, IIRC he basically that they already have enough money anyway and it would have gone against everything the band stood for back in the '60s.

It's also called reflexes. By the time I realize it's on, find the correct remote or dig it out from the couch or rescue it from Olivia, press the mute button or channel up/down, the commercial is over.

There are millions of songs to choose from and thousands of brilliant ad gurus out there. Surely they can think of something.

It was Morrison who bitched the most. From what I read about a year ago, there had been talk amongst the band about licensing some of their work for ads and it pissed Morrison off so much he even sort of "referred" to the whole thing in the song "Touch Me". The song's cold ending has Morrison singing the words "stronger than dirt" which has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the song. But it WAS the popular ad phrase used by Ajax Cleanser at the time.

Apparently it was enough to get the rest of the band to agree with him and they've held to it ever since.
