When will Moffat's s5 start filming?

Does anyone have any idea?

I'm guessing it has to be this year, surely. And as soon as it goes into production, it'll become almost impossible for them to keep Doctor 11's casting a secret.

Really I'm hoping we find out within 8 months. What say you? I'm just so damn excited I can't contain myself. :vulcan:

Also, I can't wait for Tennant's final story. Here's hoping for an Androzani belter for the best Doctor yet!

Well I've been reading around and apparently it'll start filming in August of 2009 with a release of 2010.

Remember that we've got 4 specials to come between 09' and 10'

Ah, cool. I know they've got the specials to do but I'm guessing there's going to be some crossover with the filming schedules. Or not, I know sod all about the organisational side of telly. 2 filming units, perhaps?

The Specials shoot from the 19th of January until some point in May. Series 5 starts shooting in July.

Isn't the new Doctors first episode supposed to be one of the specials?

I'm sure we'll know his identity long before series 5 starts filming.

the question is will S5 filming be before the final specail airs, it seems logical to assume that the new Doctor is AT least at the end of the final 2009 specail.

If they started fillming for 2010 before then, then we will probaly know who he is before the regeneration

I'm sure in the Christmas Radio Times, RTD said something to the effect of "Tennant will still be in the TARDIS for the next Christmas special", which would suggest to me that one year from now he'll have had his regeneration.

In one of his Christmas special interviews RTD said that he believed there'd be an announcement about the new Doctor in February. Since there's no way they'd be able to keep it a secret after he (or she) starts filming in July, February is a logical time from a PR standpoint- it provides a publicity blitz about halfway between "The Next Doctor" and "Planet of the Dead."

February seems like it would be a bit early to me. Why announce him so early and spoil any surprise? Assuming he'd make his first appearance at the end of next year's Christmas special (maybe the way Tennant first appeared), which would still be 10 months away in February, surely waiting till July would work. What would be the advantage of knowing who the next Doctor is in February? (Aside from avoiding the masses in Doctor Who fandom pulling their hair out in the interim, that is.) :D

Well, like I said: publicity. If they announce in February, there can be a separate burst of coverage at the start of filming in July, and they'll get twice the press they would if they let everything happen at once. Also, every day they delay once the new Doctor has signed is a day the press can steal their thunder by scooping the announcement. It's also entirely possible that the new Doctor will come in to film a regeneration in late April or early May, and the odds of keeping that secret are already pretty slim. Besides, if they have to make the announcement months ahead of the new Doctor's first appearance anyway, what difference does a couple months make? There won't be any more surprise ten months after than there would have been six.

True enough, I suppose.

How long before Tennant first appeared in "Parting of the Ways" was he announced as being the next Doctor?

He was announced on April 15th 2005 and "The Parting of the Ways" aired on June 18. Tennant had been mentioned as the heavy favorite in press reports as early as March 30, even before Eccleston's departure was confirmed.

Yeah, but then again Eccleston wasn't the favorite to become the ninth Doctor, but he did.

My best guess from everything I've read is that the last special will be in early 2010, which will feature a cliff-hanger of the Doctor's regeneration. Like the last episode of series one. This would then lead on to the next series.

^ I understood that all of the specials would air before the 2009 Christmas special, and therefore it would follow that the Doctor's regeneration would happen at some point during the end of that episode, allowing 2010 to start fresh with the new Doctor.

Oh really? It's just whenever I read something about the specials it says they're airing between 2009-2010. If it were just 2009 then why not just say in 2009.

There's been a whole discussion of when the specials will air in another thread. All we know for sure is that one will air around Easter and another around Christmas, and that the final two form a two-parter that will air before Easter 2010. However, in one interview RTD mentions that there'll be a young female companion at Easter 2009 and then an older woman at Christmas, suggesting that it's Easter, Christmas, and the final two-parter sometime after Christmas, which has been suggested by spoiler sources for months now.

^ I had originally heard (and I guess nothing has popped up to change this view, at least nothing official that I've seen) that 2009 would be the specials with Tennant, then 2010 would be the start of Moffat's regime with the new Doctor. Beyond assorted speculations, this is how I've continued to think of upcoming Who. I do, however, allow for the possibility that my info is severely out of date. :D

The original press releases said 2009, but they also said there'd only be three specials. Since the expansion to four, references to an early 2010 end date for the Tennant specials have become more common.

Check out the Podcast for TND. Gardner and Davies both state that all the Specials will be shown in 2009 and Series 5 will not be delayed until Autumn 2010.
