When We're All Older...

Nardpuncher

Rear Admiral
I was thinking about my dad who's 76 years old and doesn't like Star Trek or anything like that ( Star Wars, Indiana Jones etc. etc.) but so many of us here obviously do.

I'm 35, so I'll be his age in 2050. Many of us will still be talking about all the genre stuff out there(whatever there will be then)...won't that be weird? I'm used to old people talking about John Wayne movies and the old radio show of Gunsmoke...but a whole generation or more that talks about Trek and Star Wars (and computer games too!) will be a little strange.

Don't worry, I'm from the future, and star trek is still popular among all generations in 2060. Yes I've travelled to 2060.

Old folk talk about Trek now. There are senior citizens who are Trek fans. They were the fans who watched TOS in their 20s, 30s and 40s back in the first run. Some of them still come to cons, and some have sadly passed away. When WorldCon came to the UK a few years back there was a wall for folks to sign who had been to every WorldCon. There were quite a few sigs on the wall, and the first WorldCon was back in 1939.

I was 51 when I attended my first convention.
If I can afford it, I plan to be going at least once a year until Connor Trinneer quits signing on. :)

I'm pushing close to 50. I started wit Star Trek with TAS and one of the first things I did when getting a computer was to find myself in Star Trek related Yahoo clubs and groups. Andromeda was the new show with lots of potential back then and the Slipstream lead me here.

My parents are in their 50s, and I can still talk Trek with them. They grew up on the original series. Although they aren't fans the way I am, they don't think its weird to discuss it, and they haven't "grown out" of liking it.

When we're older, yakking about Trek or anything else on the internet will be something only geezers do. The kids will be all off frakkin' around in the holosuites. :p

I'm 64, and more into Trek than ever.

The higher up you go in Starfleet International conferences, the older the mean age, and the broader the waistlines, and the fewer classic "Star Trek nerds" there are.

I'm 33, and I also know many people who are a decade or two older than me and into Star Trek. I have little doubt old people will be talking about Kirk and Picard when I'm old enough to be one, instead of just feeling like it.

We'll know we're really getting old, though, when they come out with large print editions of Magic: The Gathering and organize games in the old folks homes. And when Britney Spears is given the Lifetime Achievement Award. :wtf:

I recall my late Grandmother (she passed in 1983) loved TOS, espically Sulu. I still remember going to her house and she would love to talk trek, and she lived long enough to see Star Trek The Motion Picture.

It's been quite a few years ago, I think she born was about 1903, so she was in her 80's and still trekking. At times I wonder what she would think about TNG, DS-9, Voy and Ent, not to mention all the films. Being in my 40's I wonder what the world and the world of Trek will be like in a few decades, when I get to be around her age...

There will be nothing to talk about. When I die, I'm taking Star Trek with me. All of it.

Don't worry, you still have some time. I plan to live til my 200th birthday. You can continue to enjoy Trek until April 17, 2170, after that, it's mine.

All mine.

My father is 68 this year and while not as rabid a fan as me he is a fan of the shows, owns the movies and goes to the theater for new films when they release.(Sadly, he saves his rabid devotion for Dr. Who!):shifty:

I'm in my fourth decade and fairly active on parts of this board(fanfic, mostly). I was born with Star Trek(we're about a month apart) and can't remember a time when it wasn't a part of my life-so I don't imagine there will be a time when it isn't a part of my life no matter how old I get.

At that point the world of Trek will be the real world. Warp drive, Vulcans, the whole ball of wax. There will be no need for Star Trek.
