When is "The internet of everything" too much?

It's like those old sci-fi movies that put blinking lights into every mundane device, just to show that it's The Future. The Internet has become those blinking lights, because The Future ... is now!

OMG you just reminded me of the gaudy fad of LED lighting.

Do LEDs have to be inside every freaking pc part?

Bad enough PC cases come with tacky lighting now ram sticks and even power supplies of all things have lighting in them. I find it gaudy and tacky.

Taste and Style went out a very long time ago. When the world was still in black & white and people wore their Sunday Best just to go to the Chemists on the corner, for a pack of Lucky Strike. I mean ... after the tie dyes of The Sixties, there was no going back, was there? Vulgar, tacky, garish tastelessness hasn't gone out of style, since. Whether it be found in styles of clothes, furniture ... or electronics.

True but LED lighting is like the cockroach that just won't die.

I cut all the wires when I see stuff like this and have to use it in a build.

Anything to jack up the price, that's all ...

When I can spring for it, I'm getting myself a classic, antique car, like a 1960's era Ford Mustang, just to get away from all this Internet in my gas tank ... stuff! For real, My friend's band new truck wouldn't even start because of a computer glitch. It's bad enough dealing with Road Rage and Idiot Drivers, having a car that's fighting against you, well ... that's kind of where you have to say, "you know what? Take this geeky shit out my engine, already and put in those old fashioned needle gages, like in the Olden Days."

Oh, I don't know what he ended up doing with it. The truck was brand new, so it's on warranty. I can only imagine the dealers took care of it, somehow.

It's rather amusing when cars and trucks now need software patches in order to run. Do they come with anti virus too?

See, that's why I wouldn't trust autonomous vehicles. I'd hate to see a virus hit that. All hell would break loose.

And preytell why do cars and trucks need computers in them?

Is that really essential?
GPS systems, engine management for fuel economy and power optimisation, antilock braking, tachograph monitoring (where legislation for truck operation requires this), safety monitoring, automatic parking - perhaps not essential as I drove vehicles for many years without such systems - but I think we'd miss them were they removed. I manage just fine without a GPS system but that's because I plan routes in advance on Google Earth streetview and commit waypoints to memory.

I'm not against computers in cars.. but they do NOT need to be connected to the internet, that is what I hate, the manufacturer doesn't have to know where I drive, they spy as much as $pycro$oft and Google etc.

But if they didn't have that ability to "watch over you" how would you get patches and fixes? Oh hang on this is a bloody car we're talking about :D

A GPS system doesn't need to be connected to anything inside the car does it? The only connection should be for power and usually that's via the cigarette lighter if there's one.

Depends if you go for the cheapo option.

There's probably another computer in the dasboard camera many people use to provide evidence for insurance claims.

Yeah but usually a dashboard camera is an after market add on not part of the actual car's wiring is it? At least over here they are sold as add ons.

I refer you to your original question:

Nothing there about whether the computers need to be built-in original equipment to be considered.

The thing is, and I hope this is something manufacturers have thought about, is that I think as we get more and more computer systems in a vehicle, they need to be compartmentalized and perhaps sandboxed to prevent a cascade failure. The more and more vehicles require computers to do something, the more inherent risk there is of glitches and possible viruses to affect the overall vehicle. And the issue is only going to get worse over time.

Vehicles now even come with built-in wifi, ffs!

Yeah even some public transit buses here have wifi onboard though that's more as a PR thing for commuters.

Well, I think it makes more sense for public transit, including buses and trains to include wifi because they're services. Wifi in personal vehicles is being marketed to families with kids with their iPads. Not that I have anything against that, but it feels less like an inherent need.

Seriously you can't just open the bloody door to see what is inside the fridge?
Open the door to see what's in the fridge? What kind of dark age savage are you? I want to know what's in my fridge and what temperature the beer is at before I get up off my ass! And it better open the door for me when I get there as well. I don't want to be doing manual labour like those poor people that I've heard about do.:lol:
