When have you been embarrassed by fans?

Mr. Laser Beam

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Meaning this: When's the time that you, as a fan of whatever team you hold dear, have been most embarrassed by something that *other* fans of that team have done?

For me, I think it'd have to be the time during the 1977 World Series that Reggie Jackson was in the outfield and fans were throwing firecrackers - FIRECRACKERS - at him. He had to stop the game and go get his batting helmet even though he was in right field at the time. Because I agree that having one's hair set on fire is not a fun thing to have to endure. And this was Mr. October himself! How fucking low can people get? Throwing gaddam *firecrackers* at a player, *any* player, is just so damn low.

So when has something like this happened to you? When other fans of your favorite team have done something that really embarrassed you.

I can't say I've experienced anything like the lowlife Southern Miss basketball fans or the fans in Philadelphia who take pride in throwing batteries at players. But I do feel like whenever I listen to sports talk radio, the most ignorant and stupid sports fans must live in my state. But I'm sure everyone feels like that.

Hypocritical England supporters booing foreign players for their supposed "cheating" while cheering the Premier League's worst divers - Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.

Whenver I see idiot fans dressed up like this...regardless of the team.

Still waiting for Cubs fans to apologize for what they did to Steve Bartman, who did NOT deserve all the shit that's been heaped upon him, and the harassing phone calls, death threats, and all that crap. :(

^I was on a road trip several years back. Caught a night game at Wrigley. Awesome stadium. Loved the ivy, the standings flags, 7th inning stretch thing, etc.

I was turned off by the fact that someone on the opposing team got hit in the hand by a pitch and the crowd cheered when he had to leave the game. I forget who it was, but he ultimately broke his wrist.

As for the Bartman thing, I agree. It's just a game, get a life. The sun still comes up the next day.

^ Sounds like what happened to Michael Irvin.

To explain: October 10, 1999. Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia. Eagles vs. Cowboys. Irvin, playing for the Cowboys, slams into the field (side note: the Vet not only sucked as a stadium, but its field was one of the worst in all the NFL) basically head first. He suffers an injury that will end his career. Fucking Eagles fans CHEERED when that happened. :(

Shit like that happened so often at the Vet that eventually the stadium had its own jail to deal with all the assholes. :guffaw:

And more recently, let's not forget a bleacher bum at Wrigley throwing beer on Shane Victorino. Not only that, but the security guys initially tossed the WRONG GUY out of the game! I hope they went back and let the guy back in again and then threw out the RIGHT one.

Not anymore but some supporters of my favorite football team were known as neo nazi. That was not pleasant at all...
Racism toward other players or other supporters is very unpleasant too and it still happens sometimes :(

I have no respect for people who insist on making idiots out of themselves, swearing and the lot, when children are present.

^ Yeah. As rowdy as the bleacher creatures get at Yankee Stadium, they don't swear or punch people or anything like that (I've seen guys get thrown out by stadium security for pushing the line). They don't do this just because there are kids in the stands, they do it because it's just wrong to act like assholes at a game.

There is a difference between normal sports fan trash-talk and being a jerk.

To be fair, Philadelphia sports fans do tend to be in a class all their own.

^ It doesn't seem to be so bad now that the Vet is history. There must have been something about that old dump that made the fans act like crap. Nowadays there may be the occasional fight or shouting match but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad at the Linc and Citizens Bank Park, as it used to be at the old place.

Although wasn't it the Phillie Phanatic that's the only sports *mascot* who got his ass kicked (by Tommy Lasorda of all people :guffaw: )? :D

Yeah, racist chants are terrible. When I see some idiots stumble around almost in a drunk coma or something like that in my club's colours, I don't really care, the only ones they are embarrassing are they themselves. But when they scream/sing racist songs they make us all look bad.

At least I've never heard of anything like that happening with fans of my club...

Europa League - Athletic ban urinating fan

Athletic Bilbao have identified and barred a supporter who urinated on visiting Anderlecht fans during the Europa League match at San Mames.

Bilbao said the fan had apologised unreservedly for his actions and that he had had his club membership suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary commission hearing.

Television cameras captured the supporter urinating from the upper stands at Thursday's 1-1 draw.

The last time (2 years ago I think) they had this banner during a PSG- Lens : (not to mention the upside down above  )

"Pédophiles, chômeurs, consanguins : bienvenue ches les Ch'tis"

"Pedophiles, jobless, consanguineous : welcome to the Ch'tis" (a Ch'ti is someone from the very north of the country, someone from Lens for exemple)

The medias were delighted during a few weeks...
I like football but sometimes I really don't want want to tell that to everyone.

Consanguinous is a big word for an insult. I wiki'd it. It means of the same kinship.

Is that a French term for what call inbred?

I have no idea if there is a difference between inbred and consanguineous, I just used the equivalent in English wikipedia gave me. If it's a mistake, I'm sorry :)

That's true. By all accounts, the Wachovia Centre is much, much less intimidating than the Spectrum was, especially when compared to the days of the Broad Street Bullies.
