TNG took of with season three, but the first episode that really convinced me was first season's "Conspiracy".
Season Two, premiere eps with the Repulse shuttle scene and fanfare.
Riker's got his beard, Worf's in security gold, Geordi's down in engineering, Guinan shows up in Ten Forward, all the elements now in place.
This is the season that introduces the Borg...
brings us "The Measure of a Man" "A Matter of Honor" "The Emissary" "Q Who?"
Despite popular opinion to the contrary,
for me TNG always hit its stride with Season Two.
I don't agree with majority rule.. because this is sometime what happened in the past. As i've read many times before etc. etc etc.. At that time TNG did take off from season 4!. The episode best of both worlds was a hit and since then tng was a hit.
For most star trek fans, who look after a long time to it, season 1, 2 and 3 can even mean it's started. For me it's just from the beginning. (just like the show) for others it can be season 2, and most people here think season 3. But no matter what you think, it will never change when in was broadcast every week it took off from season 4.. not 3 or 5.. but 4. Majority rule doesn't apply here.
Season 3, definitely.
With the first episode of that season one gets the impression that the creators of the show finally discovered how to light their sets, cloth their actors, compose better music and provide better VFX.

WIth the exception of lighting I agree.
I think that it has to be Season 3. There were moments in the second season that hinted at the future, but overall the second season wasn't much better than the atrocious first one.

So, I'm nearly done with the third season of TNG, and I gotta tell ya, not impressed. This is supposed to be the best season of TNG, according to a lot of the fans on here?

Don't get me wrong, it's an improvement from season 2, but not by that much. Watching TNG only makes me feel like putting on some TOS, which is why I haven't gotten longer than almost 2 seasons in over a month now.
I really hope it will get better though and grow on me, it needs to or they will just take up shelf-space. Sad but true.

Certainly your tastes may be different than mine and others on this board who love TNG.
Just out of curiousity, what is offputting about TNG to you. The writing? The characters? The actors? You mentioned being a fan of TOS. If you're looking for more of a TOS flavor, TNG is not that show. You might find a similar feel in a few early episodes of TNG S1, but that's about it.
I hope you come to like the show. TNG had many, many great episodes.
