When does the show "take off"?

TNG took of with season three, but the first episode that really convinced me was first season's "Conspiracy".

Season Two, premiere eps with the Repulse shuttle scene and fanfare.

Riker's got his beard, Worf's in security gold, Geordi's down in engineering, Guinan shows up in Ten Forward, all the elements now in place.

This is the season that introduces the Borg...
brings us "The Measure of a Man" "A Matter of Honor" "The Emissary" "Q Who?"

Despite popular opinion to the contrary,
for me TNG always hit its stride with Season Two.

Agreed, Season Two.

I still go back and watch a lot of these episodes.

Season three. The premiere that season made it seem like a brand new show. It looked slicker and the episodes were so much better than most episodes that came before.

Watching through the series again, sarted S3 again, I admit the transition to Season 3 is awe-inspiring and I'm hesistant to think of a single Season 3 episode I dislike. The story telling became a whole lot stronger, too.

That said , there are a lot of good episodes in Season 2.

I don't agree with majority rule.. because this is sometime what happened in the past. As i've read many times before etc. etc etc.. At that time TNG did take off from season 4!. The episode best of both worlds was a hit and since then tng was a hit.

For most star trek fans, who look after a long time to it, season 1, 2 and 3 can even mean it's started. For me it's just from the beginning. (just like the show) for others it can be season 2, and most people here think season 3. But no matter what you think, it will never change when in was broadcast every week it took off from season 4.. not 3 or 5.. but 4. Majority rule doesn't apply here.

^I was there for the original broadcasts, and my experience was that the quality of the show increased dramatically from the get-go of Season 3. BOBW was just the perfect end to a stellar season. I'm sure many here can say the same thing. So there's no revisionist history going on here, we're calling it as we remember it.

I think we're asking when it creatively took off, not financialy or in ratings.

The creative risks and leaps the show took in Season 3, not to mention the vastly improved aspects in every level of production is by far when the show "took off."

Watch... :sigh: "Shades of Gray" and then "Evolution" and you'll see the vast differences the show took between those two seasons. Hell, watch any random episode of Seasons 2 and 3 and you'll see that the show "took off" in Season 3.

I originally planned to own seasons 3-5 only, but bought season 2 for Measure of a Man, and heck--I kind of like Pulaski. The classic seasons in my opinion are 4 and 5. I don't really like the finale much, but I own it on the Q set...and the time travel set, too, I think. Stupid fan collectives--I owned no Star Trek on dvd before they started churning those things out, and now I have not only the fan collectives but the complete series of TOS, VOY, and ENT, plus TNG 2-5. Sigh...

Original question? Another vote for season 3.

Season 3, definitely.
With the first episode of that season one gets the impression that the creators of the show finally discovered how to light their sets, cloth their actors, compose better music and provide better VFX.

WIth the exception of lighting I agree.

Well, the lighting in the first episode (I forget the name - it is the one with the Nanites) of Season III is very good, dramatic, for both the live-action sets and the VFX-shots of the Enterprise.
After that episode they (unfortunately) dialed back a lot on the dramatic lighting, but it is still better than in the first two seasons.

I think that it has to be Season 3. There were moments in the second season that hinted at the future, but overall the second season wasn't much better than the atrocious first one.

The first season alone has several of the worst Trek TV episodes in existence.

.

I beg to differ:

Season 2:

Where Silence Has Lease.
Loud as a Whisper
A Matter of Honor
The Measure of a Man
Contagion
Time Squared
Q Who
The Emissary

Alll fantastic Season 2 episodes. By nearly every measure. That showed the potential the series had. Season 1 was uneasy, for sure, but Season 2 showed great growth.

So, I'm nearly done with the third season of TNG, and I gotta tell ya, not impressed. This is supposed to be the best season of TNG, according to a lot of the fans on here?

Don't get me wrong, it's an improvement from season 2, but not by that much. Watching TNG only makes me feel like putting on some TOS, which is why I haven't gotten longer than almost 2 seasons in over a month now.

I really hope it will get better though and grow on me, it needs to or they will just take up shelf-space. Sad but true.

Seconded! I'd throw in "Contagion" and "Peak Performance", and the circle is complete. Third season is fantastic, though.

It took off for me from the first. It never occurred to me at the time not to watch the new Trek.

I watch and skip episodes from all seasons.

Where Silence Has Lease, Loud as a Whisper, and The Emissary are three of my all time favorite episodes. I like Encounter at Farpoint (but probably because I like to remember how it felt to see new Trek on TV again.)

I didn't think it was best. Season 3 was definately the year that we started getting good episodes consistently though. They also made several improvements.

The lighting on the set wasn't so damn dark
New uniforms that didn't make them look like superheroes
More episodes connected to TOS era
The actors started to finally become more comfortable in their roles
Better scripts

I thought TNG's best season was either season 4 or season 5 though.

Certainly your tastes may be different than mine and others on this board who love TNG.

Just out of curiousity, what is offputting about TNG to you. The writing? The characters? The actors? You mentioned being a fan of TOS. If you're looking for more of a TOS flavor, TNG is not that show. You might find a similar feel in a few early episodes of TNG S1, but that's about it.

I hope you come to like the show. TNG had many, many great episodes.

I had seen the show before, and I was very aware that it would be nothing like TOS since they are completely different shows from different eras of televison. The characters, I'd say, is the most offputting to me about TNG, there are so many characters I don't give a shit about because frankly they are boring and uninteresting. The obvious first choice being Wesley Crusher, hell even his mother, Troi, God what an annoying character she is, and a pretty horrible actress. Then we have the man whose acting would fit best in Days of Our Lives or Bold & The Beautiful, Riker. I just don't see any appeal in him whatsoever, is he always this stale?

I do, however, love Picard, Worf, Data & Geordi.

I think that although 2nd season had some very good epsiodes and was much better than first, it had also some big mistakes, like Samaritan Share, Up The Long Ladder.
Season 3 was the season when the show really took off, and improved very much.
Although, I started loving the show when I was watching it for the first time, already in first season. Mostly because of Data and Picard, I think.
And first 2 seasons had much more humor, which I miss in later seasons.
