When did they know it was over?

I was rewatching season 4 recently and was wondering at what point the writers and actors knew that the show was being canceled. It is g=hard to tell from watching because they go right from regular episodes to the finale.

From what I read they pretty much knew it even before season four began ...

Watching that season was so depressing, more than I remeber from TV. Just when the show was getting good imo they yanked it!

I think TPTB decided to cancel the show immediately after "Babel One" aired, due to that episode having the lowest ratings yet for the series. Why I don't know, "Babel One" is one of the very best of the series, IMO. I don't believe the cast was made aware of the cancellation until they were filming the "In a Mirror, Darkly" episodes.

By the interviews I have seen and read, the cast were happy to find out there was going to be a season 4 and everyone knew that would be the last season. It may not have been "official" until later in season 4 when it would have been time to renew contracts, but it was known going in that season 4 was created to help the series in syndication and that would be all.

Yeah, that's what I always figured as well. There were plans for a fifth season, but they had to accept the probability that the fourth was their last season.

I seem to recall from the commentary on the DVD that they got the official word the day they were filming MUArcher's speech to the troops in IAMD.

If you're wondering when they found out in terms of production schedule, I believe they were filming In A Mirror Darkly - Part 2 when the official cancellation anmnouncement was made.

in the commentary on broken bow
braga and bermen are talking about the future guy, how they haven't yet revealed who he was, and probobly never were
they said they were mid season 4, it sounded to me like they did not know they were going to be cancelled, they were acting like there is still a possibility they might tell us who future guy was...

I feel that they knew just as season four commenced, but that is only personal speculation. Either way, it was a great pity that it cam to an end.

Indeed. I recall reading something to the effect that the MU two-parter wasn't exactly something the cast was keen on doing, as it took away from them, knowing this was their last season, doing their true characters. That I can understand. It was neat seeing the Tholians, and the Gorn, and an 'almost Enterprise 1701' bridge set. Pity we never got to see Future Guy the Romulan...and Shran bringing his uniqueness to the crew on an ongoing basis. Not to mention the Rom War's beginnings...sigh.

Drexler told me in his blog that the production personnel during S4 thought their chances were roughly 50/50 for quite some time until the final decision came out.

Coto and the Reeves-Stevenses certainly had decent hopes for a S5, considering the amount of pre-prep they put into it.

The cancellation was sad, really. They had so many possibilities and we all could see them but for some reason the writers just didn't.
