I was rewatching season 4 recently and was wondering at what point the writers and actors knew that the show was being canceled. It is g=hard to tell from watching because they go right from regular episodes to the finale.

Yeah, that's what I always figured as well. There were plans for a fifth season, but they had to accept the probability that the fourth was their last season.By the interviews I have seen and read, the cast were happy to find out there was going to be a season 4 and everyone knew that would be the last season. It may not have been "official" until later in season 4 when it would have been time to renew contracts, but it was known going in that season 4 was created to help the series in syndication and that would be all.
