When did Star Trek jump the shark?

Klingons probably think "John" is a silly name as there's probably a Klingon word that sounds like it.

Anybody used to watch Alien Nation? There was a running gag that Detective Sykes' last name was very close to the Tenctonese, word for "excrement head."

If you want my opinion as to when Star Trek jumped the shark (and by "Star Trek" I mean the entire franchise, not just TOS), it would definitely have to be Star Trek: Generations. I know that the producers of the show had the best of intentions with bringing the TNG cast to the big screen for the foreseeable future, but quite frankly Generations was the start of Trek's downward spiral. Between the senseless destruction of a fantastic ship that the audience had the last seven years invested in, we also got the senseless death of one of the greatest Trek legends of all, all in an effort to deliver some silly fanwankery.

After that, we got three more movies that ranged from mediocre to downright awful, and two more shows with somewhat good premises that they ultimately couldn't live up to.

(I'm not counting DS9 in this list, because it had already started and got its steam before Generations came out.)

The more I watch Babylon 5 the less and less I find myself liking Modern Trek. So I'm starting to think it was Encounter at Farpoint when Trek jumped the shark.

Watching would be fine. Listening to B5 is where I have problems. ;)

I'm going to say never. I don't think a franchise as big as Trek can jump the shark as a whole. Even if an individual series may have, I don't think that was indicative of Trek as a whole. Just imo of course. And I don't think any of the series jumped the shark. They may have arguably stagnated, and had low points (that have already been mentioned), but I think every series has managed to redeem itself.
Nicely put. The quality of Star Trek has been all over the map since it's inception.
I think it's the willingness to work in sci-fi and take those kinds of chances. The result can be brilliance or something to cringe at, and people will seldom agree on which is which. It's a bit like jazz.

Well season three of TOS Fred Frieberger did say, Oh I get it now. It's tits in space. After that she was a three pack a day hooker on 42nd street. So Trek killed the shark and made sandwutches for everyone? or is it still waiting for it's shark in shining armor and not a brass suit. A shark jumping Star Trek sounds about like what Braga did by creating a sequal to a show he's never seen.

Commercialization started with IV to grab the non fan. Dukat changing into a Bajoran, the tribbles was scrapping the bottom of the barrel with nothing. Little Green Men shheesh.

Oh yea, and Jeri Taylor deciding that the Alpha quadrant was too small and familiar a place to tell stories in any more so she had a woman lose her Starship and get lost only to be found by JJ.Abrahms (Judas?) - definately not the shark in shining armor.

Aw, come on, poor Scott.... I liked him. My mum has a serious crush on him, too. :p

I really liked him in Quantum Leap, but something about Captain Archer grates on my nerves. Can't put my finger on it.

I've always felt that it was the mannerisms that Bakula brought to Archer's character that were the most annoying. The whiny petulant voice, the constant head-bobbing and pacing, etc. *oy*

To me Bakula never really had a lot of screen 'presence', command charisma, call it whatever. He's a good actor, but all in all... just bland. Of course, that's IMO, though.

Cheers,

What about ENT wasn't a bland watered down BBC production. It was better than all that quacking Kate Mulgrew did. Not by much. He looked like Alph though.
