Funny how cowardice and ignorance aren't considered one of the seven deadly sins. I wonder why.

Ignorance is merely a lack of knowledge. Such as I am ignorant of complex physics. Now willful ignorance, saying that I don't need to learn anything else, that I am complete, well that comes from pride.

Cowardice, absolute fear that turns men into mice...Pride that has turned your heart away from God in the empty belief that you can face the world without His help.

Anybody that answered no to lust is lying.

And I don't see an option for "all" on that poll.

As for my sins, I'm not religious by any stretch of the imagination, but knowing how the religious nuts deal in absolutes, I'm probably guilty of all seven seven times over.

Except lust. I'm guilty of that on a daily basis.

Well I was trying to make a political point about how this list emphasizes certain sins over others in an attempt to emphasize passive personality traits. This coming from a strictly atheistic/scientific point of view. Those are some interesting answers though.

My biggest one would be gluttony, working on dealing with that. Pride is a big one. Sloth sometimes. Lust yes, but not in a major way. Envy very minor. Wrath...on occasion when dealing with some people. Greed...not lately.

I can't remember where I read it, but I recall a text describing the Sins as exaggerations of postive virtues in one extreme, with equally unpleasant traits being present if taken to the opposite extreme. This was used as an argument for moderation. Now that I type it out, it sounds vaguely Nicomachean (golden mean, and all that) but I'm not sure if the text I'm thinking of is indeed Aristotle or one of the early Christian philosophers, based on his principles.

Anyway, it suggested (for example) that Pride is actually a virtue, whereas in the extreme directions, you would have Vanity (if in excess) or Lack of Confidence (if insufficient). Likewise, Generosity would be the middle ground between Extravagance (if in excess) and Greed (if insufficient).

Looked at that way, I think my most extreme inclination is not Pride (as I suspect most would think about me), but rather Greed or even more likely, Sloth. My Pride is immense, but not disproportionate. Even my Greed is not all that excessive in the grand scheme of things most of the time. But my Sloth is remarkable.

My life is pleasant and successful in a number of ways, and I am happy with it... but if I were not so lazy, I could have done, and still could do, so much more. And yet I feel no essential disquiet at that knowledge, which only underscores why I really do think Sloth must be my greatest, most intense vice.

Quote for Truth. And elevating oneself over another merely for knowing certain facts that others do not is also Pride.

Oh, in that case, sign me up for pride, a whole fuckload of pride.

Well, I didn't quite know how to respond to it at first, which is why I ended up saying no. I guess you could call it lust. I prefer to call it "fun", or "appreciation", or "all American past-time".

An excellent interpretation; but the the best thing I ever read about the Seven Deadly Sins is right here.

Or "not a sin." :mallory:

I always was on the Mary Anne side of the debate, too. Also preferred Hoshi over T'Pol and Willow over Buffy.

Sloth (laziness) is a big problem for me. I'm a very lazy procrastinator as evidenced by my posting here instead of studying.

Fair enough. But, no matter how you dress it up with pretty words, it's lust.

At least, that's what the God freaks I know would say.
