It is remarkable how many people ask me to spell my surname. I'm thinking of changing the spelling to something really exotic ~ suggestions?
It's not an easily abbreviated name although my friend, another Heidi, calls me Hides, which is acceptable.
I do not, however, under any circumstances respond to 'Heidi Hi' ~ Ever

Nope. I'm also a Jonathan.

My most common nickname is Jono. Also had Jon, Jonny, J-Dog, J Lo, Nelly, Tank, Raptus, Chocolate Bear (taken from Scrubs), and other random ones.

My use to having my last name mispronounced and misspelt but its my first name that I get annoyed about. I'd had it misspelt more then correctly spelt. Sometimes it doesn't matter if I spell it for them, it comes back with an extra "h" or an "on" at the end. I even had my bank a couple of years back decide to change the spelling of my name on my reissue of their cards and I was not impressed.

Awesome! Jono is a pretty cool nickname.

I think my mother realized that my last name was so confusing that she would give me two so that at least one would be pronounceable. That didn't work very well since most people I meet drop the "T" and call me Brian.

My girlfriend started calling me Seánie around the time I first met her a few years ago, and we were just friends. Some of my other friends started calling me that too, but she was a little protective of the nickname. So then the others started calling me Seánu instead to avoid her wrath, and it actually stuck.

At work I get called by my initials, SDG, or sometimes just G for my last name. I also get called Uncle Seán at work by a dwindling group of twenty-something women. That's a long story.

It's really only been the last few years that I've gotten any nicknames with staying power.

So yeah, it is supposed to guide pronunciation. I'm guessing it's fallen out of use because leaving it off is easier.

Wayne was my dad's first name. His middle name was Lamar. I've had lots of people ask me over the years if my dad is a black guy and/or I'm biracial, because apparently Wayne Lamar, combined with one of the most common English-derived surnames in the world, sounds "black". I shit you not.

I think I've revealed my real name here before, and certainly people who know me outside of Trekbbs are aware of it, but I'm disinclined to post it today.
