The tricorder...it's beautiful and actually functional (as it was originally imagined as a three-function recorder of sorts). I love the communicator, but its controls are nonsense

The tricorder came a close second for me, but I agree that the controls on the communicator are a bit funny. Having said that, I've used actual phones with worse (Samsung G600 for example).

I think I'd go with the phaser, by making the "barrel" short and the rest swept behind the grip, it makes it look like no other "ray-gun" of it's day (see the one below in the pictures) and really helps to keep the show's look less dated (much like the warp nacelles).

^ and yet, no cell phone designer has yet to approach the style of the original. Someday I'll get around to taking the innards out of a cell phone and shoving them inside a communicator.

I don't know, my RAZR fits really nicely in my front pocket and looks pretty sharp to boot.
