What's your absolute favourite film ever?

Children of Men, for being the most interesting dystopian future I've seen and for also being a, ahem, bitchin' action movie.
Baldwin had other commitments, and the producers opted not to wait for him. I'm sure they didn't care once They got Harrison Ford. It's a shame though, because Baldwin's performance just cries out for a few more films.
It's like if Sean Connery had only done one Bond film.

For me its tricky to pick one favourite film as, to me, it applies to any film that you don't need to be in a particular mood to watch (you can just watch it whenever and still enjoy it)

There's simply no such thing as a best film, no more than there is a single best song (unless you limit to one director, or to one songwriter, then there could be).

This is a very difficult question, because it's really hard to compare, say, Apocalypse Now (which is the film that effects me most whenever I watch it - I'm haunted for days, and vaguely depressed for a while each time I see it) to something like Out of Africa...or Casablanca...or Amadeus, or Doctor Zhivago, or The English Patient, or Dances With Wolves, or The Breakfast Club, or any of my other favorites. And that doesn't even get into some of my favorite silents - The Kid, Sunrise...or some wonderful foreign films.
I guess if I have to pick just one though, I'd go with Out of Africa. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford are wonderful...the score is fabulous (John Barry is wonderful), the costumes are beautiful, the cinematography breathtaking. This film has got it all. It even has a good cry at the end. Wonderful movie.

I have a lot of favorites, but in general i have two kinds of favorite films,
one is great films that I really enjoyed but because of the type of story are not really all that rewatchable, then there are others that I can sit down and rewatch all the time.
If I had to pick one i'd probably pick Star Wars: A New Hope, but if I picked next week it might be the Godfather or Gladiator or Aliens or Wrath of Khan or lotr or Ghostbusters..

I agree. As much as I love Harrison Ford in pretty much everything he's ever done, Alec Baldwin was born to play Jack Ryan. I love that movie (another of my top films of all time), and consider it to be one of the best CAST movies ever made. Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Early Jones, Courtney Vance, Fred Thompson - I wouldn't change a single one of them. They were all perfect for their roles.
Pretty sure I'll have this one all to myself.

When I was eight, I was taken to see this (one of my first "non-kiddie" movies), and instantly became obsessed with it, begging to be taken to see it whenever I saw the title on a theater marquis.
When I found it on DVD, I wore out my player from having run it on "Loop" for two weeks straight.
I can only guess how many times I've watched it... 237 maybe?

I even bought the coffee-table book! (But I didn't have to pay $146!)
Dunno what it was that pulled me in, and made it feel so realistic. Maybe it was the in-cockpit shots of McQueen that showed you he was really driving that car at full speed.
(Unfortunately, the only good clips I could find on YouTube have those shots edited out!
