What's with all the Union Jacks in the trailer?

Would it be impossible for someone to fly the flag incorrectly IN-UNIVERSE.

Even today, the British aren't so obsessed with their flag as Americans are, and since the Union Flag is nearly symmetrical it's much harder to spot.

What in canon establishes that nations don't exist on Earth in Kirk's time?

I don't think anything is said about it in Kirk's time. It does kind of go against TNG though, when they're talking about the flag of the former USA, an old nation state, pre-United Earth (in the episode The Royale, I think?)

My money is on states leaving the United States of America, the European Union, the Union of South African Nations, the Arab League, and other such organisations with shabby cotton flags to join United Earth who offered them proper CGI holoflags.

So what we've learnt is :-

It's called the Union Flag
It's upside down (a sign of distress)

Good. I'm glad they didn't go the same way that Doctor Who did in "The Beast Below" (they should have added a line to say that the Scottish ship exploded upon launch).

What interests me is how much of 23rd century London they will show. If Westminster has survived, does a Parliament still meet there? Likewise for Buckingham Palace (and I bet Charles STILL isn't king!)
