What's With All The Commanders?

I was reading it on MA and thought the casualty list was from a single episode, when you asked which one I went back and had a look, which is when I discovered it was from at least two. Since they were all seen on screen (though admittedly some on a small LCARS display) it is canon, when she launched Voyager had at least 16 commanders and lieutenant commanders onboard, all of whom were lost either during transit to the DQ or on the journey home.
Where in Memory Alpha does it say that they were all lost? There are only 4 KIA lieutenant commanders or commanders in the list you yourself provided. What you linked to was the entire crew manifest, as understood by Memory Alpha. Captain Janeway herself is on that list; it's not a list of everyone who was lost! Just because they mostly hid in the bowels of the ship and many were only named in one or more crew manifests (not casualty lists) that you can only read if you screencap them, that doesn't mean that they were all lost.

My point remains that it seems ridiculously high for such a small ship on a patrol and recovery mission of the Badlands, without any explanation of what positions they held or duties they carried out.
Since you've yet to produce the actual screencaps of your casualty list, your point does not remain. So far, all that's happened is that your point has been contradicted by the link that you yourself provided.

ETA: Here is another link that might be helpful.

It was a 2 week mission.

in and out.

Get to the base.

Tuvok turns the shields off.

Janeway transports everyone up.

Then Janeway blows up the base, or even the moon it was on with the tricobolt device she was packing.

And they all go home.

Now consider their cargo on the return trip.

30 to a hundred (The unaforementioned base would have had more Maquis on it than just the crew of the Val Jean.) Maquis spoiling for a rumble saturated in secrets and intelligence.

Do you really think that an ensign has the grits to interrogate Maquis scum?

If you want the autonomous authority to torture your prisoner, and apply disgustingly illegal drugs and employ inhuman devices like a Klingon Mind Sifter, you'd best at least hold at the very minimum, the rank of Lieutenant Commander and have written permission from an Admiral to be an absolute bastard.

One of these interrogators could have even been old school.

Hammering nails into the Maquis' feet.

If this is what was on the table... Did Chakotay not sign up with Janeway in the name of decency, but out of fear?

I could honestly see the Maquis wearing shock collars as they were forced to commit menial labour about the ship like some sort of press gang.

How many of Chakotay's crew were former Commanders or Lt. Commanders? Maybe once the Maquis "joined" the federation crew, they used the previous ranks of Maquis members who had passed during the fight.

Just a thought.
