I haven't spent any time in the Trek XI forum for the past few days, so I don't know what the impetus was. I didn't like the movie but that doesn't make me a "hater." I just found the plot uncompelling and the villain and his superweapon to be cliche. Or does this make me a hater in the hallowed halls of TrekBBS?

And if the avatars are supposed to be baiting people that dislike the movie, then I agree that it's disappointing that the moderators are taking part.

I don't think they're supposed to be baiting, just a bit of fun. I'm a continuity freak myself (or at least I used to be before I got into Doctor Who) and I wouldn't have felt insulted by the avatars I've seen. I think most of them are rather funny and/or clever.
