What's weirder? Talking to yourself or talking to an inanimate object?

Re: What's weirder? Talking to yourself or talking to an inanimate obj

Neither is weird. Talking to an inanimate object is good because it can't talk back, and talking to yourself is great because it's the ONE time you can have intelligent, stimulating discourse with a rational person.

You want inanimate?! I'll show you inanimate! *stands perfectly still* ;)

Well, i talk to both. I talk to my car all the time. Usually when the damn alarm doesn't wanna either unlock or lock, whichever. And i also talk to myself all the time. So i guess i'm just different.

Speak for yourself :(

I do both as the occasion demands.

Re: What's weirder? Talking to yourself or talking to an inanimate obj

Sometimes I talk to a family photo. Sometimes I talk to the dog. Sometimes, as the song says, I speak to the sky,

That's my options. No one else in the house listens to me.

I talk both to myself and inanimate objects. More often then not the latter tends to be my car though. I wuw you Saab :D

Hello all

New to the forum!
I'm def a self talker, since the age of 13 I've had a sports commentator speaking to me everyday in my head. One day I'll realise I'm now far too old to be picked to play football for England....

One day.......

Re: What's weirder? Talking to yourself or talking to an inanimate obj

Yeah, as many others have said, it's quite common to speak to yourself and inanimate objects. I mostly mumble to myself when I'm working or trying to straighten up some problems. It's not really talking because it's mostly inarticulate vocalizations and grunts instead of words. I also berate equipment when it's not working as expected, but I suppose that everyone on the planet do that, from hunter-gatherers and their stone amigdalas to supercomputer's crew at the Max Plank Institute.
I've been also known to "manipulate" mathematical concepts and operations in my hands while thinking about them, like a kind of holographic interface in my head. I suppose I look like a dork, but it really help me to think straight.

I talk to the machines, tool-bits and fixtures in my workshop and at work. 'tis ok. You have to cajole the machines into working and curse them for not understanding you.

Oh snap! I thought that was just me who did that :)

No! You cannot curse the machine, otherwise the Machine God will be angry with you, all hail the Cult Mechanicus! ;)

As long as you never mention that the machine is running good, nor mention that you are out of spare parts/end-mills/drill-bits it'll keep chugging along without fail.

Some people learn that, the rest become Managers and we lock them in offices to keep them away from the machines.

Re: What's weirder? Talking to yourself or talking to an inanimate obj

I talk to myself alot as well..I know it's odd but I sometimes have to get my thoughts out. And of course, I talk to the cats(Mom does too) and dogs as if they were real human beings. :D Glad to know I'm not the only crazy one who does that occasionally! :D

Re: What's weirder? Talking to yourself or talking to an inanimate obj

I have conversations with myself all the time, but I will also address inanimate objects if they are "doing" something worth noting.

one of my favorite stories is when a friends father was trying to cut the lawn.
the lawnmower though was having other ideas on a very hot day.
while he was out back and they were around front they could still hear the mower almost start and sputter, almost start and sputterrr sputtteerr..

finally the father just yelled at the mower.
I WISH YOU WERE ALIVE SO I COULD HURT YOU.
:p

i very quietly will mutter to my self when working on a difficult problem sometimes and well..
a lot of people i know talk to their car .
