What's up with the weird hair styles for the characters?

I don't know what you're talking about. This hair seems perfect.

Give me another month and some hair gel and I’m there. BTW, I’m 76 in that shot.
I've been trying to style my hair like Pike for the last 6 months and the only hair product I've found that gets me close to that pompadour/quiff is the medium hold, no shine pomade. I've heard you also need to blow-dry your hair but I've got no hairdryer :sigh:

Honestly, I think it's odd that all the men in Starfleet (except Worf in later seasons and Neelix in alternative realities) have short, neat hair. Surely there are some human or Federation cultures in which men normally wear it long.

Remember Worfs page boy hair cut? 😂

Likewise. I live not far from a local university and I see all sorts of folks with hip, modern haircuts, along with more traditional dos.

Fashion-wise, SNW looks like 2024 the same way TOS reflected 1960s styles: Beattle wigs, mini-skirts, go-go boots, etc. Just as all STAR TREK shows and movies betray the eras in which they were produced.

Walter Koenig wore a Beatle wig for a few episodes until his hair grew out...but it looks ridiculous because it's obviously a wig.

Starfleet's uniform and hair code is a deliberate imitation of the American military, even though it's not an organization of Americans, or even humans. Worf and AU Neelix were obviously allowed to wear traditional Klingon/Talaxian hair, but Worf's privilege came over time and Voyager was stuck in the DQ. At least after Ensign Ro, Bajorans were allowed to wear their earrings.

Is it? Pretty sure they just went with what ever hair the actor had for those not using wigs. The hair in TOS gets longer as the show progresses. Chekov's wig and later hair would not have past muster in the US military of the Sixties. I don't think the 90s shows were as "high and tight" as the actual military.

The retail store I worked at had tighter regs on hair than TNG.
