what's up with the new look of the new bbs

So far, I like the new board. Now I just can't wait until Trekmovie.com gets actual boards instead of that "comment" thing that's going on there now.

Well, that was odd... the damned board logged me out!

Anyways, the fact that they are including the original Samuel T. Cogley and Plum is a clear indication that the people running this board are trying too hard to reach out to the older posters. You either need to have all the originals in, or you need to keep it entirely new! This "hand-off" concept is crap! :censored:

^ Well, I think that you ought to just stick with your other highly successful BBS ventures, and let TBBS move onto the next generation of posters in peace.

You know... When you get off by watching small animals get crushed by high heels and/or when you get sexually arroused by watching an animal get eaten by another animal (or a person). That kind of stuff...
So if I get off watching a hot babe eat a steak, does that count as vore, or does she need to pull an Ozzy Osbourne and actually bite off a bat's head?

I'll never get used to it.

The old rotating dresser in my quarters has become a soda machine. It's far more convenient, but it leaves me wondering all the more "When do we actually come up with replicators?"

I'm pretty much sold on the new board architecture. The only real nitpick I have is that it doesn't automagically go to the newest post that hadn't been read yet when I click on a thread. I have to go to the last page, work back, and work forward again. Kind of a pain, but not too bad in the grand scheme of things. Could this be a configurable parameter that the Mods haven't found yet?

The "moved thread" icon also needs to be updated to look like the others, too.

That's a real nit on my part, but I am a web developer and I notice stoopid shit like that.

I'm ambivalent on the new board. There are a few nice new features, but there are also lost features, and things that seem to be harder to do than they used to be.

One thing I used all the time on the old format was the "view all pages" option for threads. It made following through a fast-growing thread easier... instead of having to flip from page to page, you could just scroll up and down through the entire thing.

The loss of "poll" functionality is a problem, too.

One thing I've noticed is that there seem to be a new (or at least LOWER) "limit" on private messages. I've discovered that I now need to go through and delete PMs, because I'm nearly 100 messages "over my limit."

The nicest new feature is the "member's list" but it doesn't compensate for the loss of the "who's online now" feature we use to have.

I've discovered that most of the UBB codes I used to know are now useless. So there's a big learning curve associated with it.

So... here's what I'm curious about. What was the reason for changing? Financial? Management features? User-requested features?

I'm one of those people who believe that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I'm just curious what was "broke" on the old version that's been "fixed" with the new one. Comments from "officials" and "users" both are solicited... ;)

Right that button M'Sharak posted indicates that there are new posts, and you just need to click on that it and it will take you to your first unread post. In addition, if you click on a thread without using that botton, on the top it will say "View First Unread" and you can click there and it will move you to the first unread post. Works much better for me than the old board did.

Don't try this when you are drunk, of course.

It requires decent aim.

AH! Thank you! It was hidden in plain sight... :D

Security and stability are the main reasons for the switch. vB is far, far better than UBB in those regards. Even the new 7.3 beta version of UBB is just sprucing up the window dressing rather than addressing those long-running problems, so a change seemed logical.

As an "official," I probably look at it differently than you, but fewer and less frequent crashes, and better protection against trolls and duals is worth the loss of the "view all" function and whatever else we lost. (And we're not happy about the poll thing either. Hopefully there's a way we can change that, but right now we're more concerned with making sure it all runs correctly.)

Ooh... I swore I wouldn't participate in any of the serious discussion going on in here, but what anti-troll & dual capabilities does V-bulliten have? I'm not overly familiar with the capabilities of various forums, but I had always assumed it was still just seek and destroy by the mods.
