what's the ncc-1701.com site about? Here's my thoughts

A few of you have shared this same question, but the one thing I haven't seen is any speculation. (There may have been but my A.D.D. prevented me from reading past the first page.)
First of all, when you enter the site, three of the four "cameras" display garbled images. If you look at the lower right hand side of each image, there are three buttons, two arrows and a four digit number and % symbol. If you adjust the values of each of the three images to 100.0%, the image becomes completely clear. Once you have the clear image, you'll see the images are from the teaser. The one common element is that each image shows a part of Enterprise under construction. Why three and not four? I'd like to think that perhaps I was missing something. I thought that with enough tinkering around, I would find a way to get the fourth display operational. At this writing, I have not been able to find a way to do that. Then I thought about it. Perhaps ncc-1701.com is a type of progress meter. In other words, perhaps there is a correlation between these camera views and the production of the film. Maybe more camera shots will become available the closer we get to the release of the film. Perhaps this website is intended to be be like the holes in the wooden barriers that surround the construction of a building. Well, this is the only plausable explanation that I'm aware of. I'm dying to know if this is right.

I was kinda hoping that it would be something that got updated on occassion, giving us an additional piece to the puzzle, but thus far, this has been the most stagnate mind game I've ever played. I still haven't seen the corridor... though I just barely missed it tonight. I was sitting looking at another tab, and some noise popped up. I tried figuring out what it was, and didn't remember that the corridor was accompanied by sound until it was too late. Maybe next time :(

I saw it the first time I went there, but I have yet to see it since. You can get a picture of it from Trekmovie.com

I also hope we'll be seeing more viral sites or it we'll be updated in the near future.

J.J. Abrams explained that in a speech, not referring directly to the movie. He has a box he bought as a child for $3 from a magic store that was advertised as containing $50 worth of magic tricks, and he has never opened the box. And that's part of his philosophy in making TV shows or movies: to leave some element of mystery to the imagination.

For those that disagree with me; what is your take on the site? I've heard a lot about what it isn't, but nobody has given anything contrete to the contrary. I think that Abram's is doing this so that fans have the opportunity to be a part of the construction of this hugely popular icon. This tells me that although the construction of this vessel is important to fans, they didn't want to include it in the actual film. I think they chose to do this because the more time that is dedicated to the construction of the ship, the less time will be available to tell the story that is to be told. I think a lesson has been learned here. If you look at the prequel trilogy for Star Wars, the last three films simply weren't as good as the original three. I've seen MANY films flop at the box office because more time, money and effort were devoted to CGI than the development of the characters. I think JJ has figured that out and the ncc-1701 site is an outlet for fans who are only concerned with special effects

The website has been discussed to death, and conversation basically stopped because it hasn't been updated.

But I think you're over-analyzing this. It's just a marketing tool.

And sometimes a cigar is not just a cigar. Reading the post above about Abram's box of magic tells me that we will not know the truth, even after the film has been released. For arguement's sake, let's say it is JUST a marketing tool. If that's the case, then why choose cameras that are aimed directly at the construction. There has to be an explanation as to why camera angles are illustrated? It ties into the trailer. Once you clear the images, you'll see that each of these cameras show images found in the trailer. Why not a montage of the characters in their costumes? It just seems to be so tightly linked to the images in the teaser

Don't worry, I wasn't arguing with you. You asked for opinions, and I wanted something more fun to say than, "See OP." :bolian:

You know, I have a wax frog filled with chocolate that I got for Easter in 1968, but have never eaten.

Do you think that's the same kind of thing? If so, maybe there's hope for me yet.

I'm sorry if I gave the impression I was arguing with you. That certainly wasn't what I was trying to do. It's just that no matter how benign or obscure it may be, there HAS to be some sort of significance behind it. There are just too many similarities between the teaser and the 1701 site. Am I just being the moth to the flame?

Well, I DO hope that we get more clarity than we've gotten, so far, for "Cloverfield." I mean, after extensive investigatio, I've figured out a tiny bit of what that's "really all about" but not very much. It's OBVIOUS that there's a lot of background there, but it's intentionally obscured. I'd hope that they'd do something like the "Skull Island" ecological book published after King Kong... I want to know more! (FYI, that book was amazing... but then, that was WETA, and they do tend to think things through more thoroughly than most moviemakers do).

To dive in further, what about those numbers and arrows that I mentioned above. Has anyone else discovered that when you set each percentage to 100.0 at the bottom right corner of each image, it becomes clear enough to see?

my guess is that the site will upadate with diffrent images at diffrent stages of the E's construction. Welding now, interior shots next, various work being completed. At some point a screen will reveal a plot element, or perhaps a visit from Pike will cross one of the screens. One thing I am sure of is that the site will evolve with time.

With the other three cameras set to 100%, camera 03 occasionally flashes up a picture of a TOS-style interior corridor. Blink and you'd miss it. Not really that exciting IMO.

Hi everyone. I am new here! :)

I am guessing this is just a marketing ploy but it still is in its infancy stages. As the shooting progresses or ends, therefore they start adding post production work is when they will be adding more stuff.

I think it will be updated as we get closer to the release of the film. It probably would have gotten updated sooner if the release date wasn't pushed until May. I believe the Abrams-produced Cloverfield had a viral site that was updated from time to time.
