What's the greatest film your country has produced?

Maybe not the greatest, but surely a classic. Also one of the most quotable films of all time, in my humble opinion ...

I'll go with the original Italian Job, I believe its British. Its also in my personal top ten films. It just sums up being British in the sixties. And its just a film quoters' dream:
"You were supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
"Camp Freddie, everybody in the entire world is bent."
The director was British as were most of the main and supporting cast: Michael Caine, Noel Coward, Benny Hill, Tony Beckley, Irene Handl Robert Powell, John Le Mesurier et al and a lot of it was set in Britain. Lets not forget, the three Mini Coopers, one each painted red, white and blue :-).

The Caine Mutiny

Good, but like JAG, more about lawyers and law than the navy and war.

Huh? No lawyer showed up till two-thirds of the way through the movie. Before that it was all about the navy and war.

No, it was about one ship and the conflict between the new, damaged captain and a suspicious, stressed crew and all of it was just a build up to the court martial, which is the real focus of the story.

But what does that have to do with whether it's a good movie or not? The Shining miniseries is closer to the book, but does anyone think it was better than the Kubrick movie?

Run Silent, Run Deep the book was a realistic depiction of the life of a naval officer during several submarine war patrols in the Pacific. The movie threw all that out in favor of typical shipboard drama (again, new captain, crew on edge), a boogeyman (The Bungo Straits), comic relief (Don Rickles and the noob who bet Area 7) and a greek tragedy ending.

Using your standard, yes, the movie the Shining was better than the mini because the movie improves on the original material. Run Silent, Run Deep the movie doesn't. It detracts from the original.

That said, you managed to completely ignore the part where I said the movie was "Great." That doesn't mean I have to think it's best. You can if you want.

Also, it was "Ned" Beach.

If you want to get really pissy about it, pal, the name on the cover says "Commander Edward L. Beach, USN."

Because, for all its technical and artistic achievement, and undeniable notability in the history of American film, it's a children's story about a fairly uninteresting little kid who can't wait to escape the magical realm she finds herself in to return to a probable lifetime of Kansas drudgery?

So true. This is one of those films, like Godfather, that I'll re watch any time I see it on tv and will enjoy just as much every time.

I'd probably go with Apocalypse Now, too. Mulholland Drive was my original pick, but it ended up having some French financial backing so I don't think it counts. If it does, then that would be my pick.
