What's the difference between a trekkie and a trekker?

I don't care for either "Trekkie" or "Trekker;" they're so twee. What's wrong with just being called a fan of STAR TREK, without the corny moniker from half a century ago? Some fandom traditions deserve a merciful death and this should be amongst the very first to go - especially now that STAR TREK has finally earned mainstream acceptance ...

Yo, but some of us is oldskool innit... .... (though thinking about it, I'm not entirely certain that is common "street" vernacular in the US)

As to our differing opinions on this matter, perhaps The Image of Surak summed it up best, when he expressed this famous - infamous, rather - platitude in The Classic Series:

"I am pleased to see that we have differences. May we together become greater than the sum of both of us."

I've been looking at this, and come to the conclusion there is no functional difference. Some find trekkie diminuitive, others take it to heart. Some think trekkies are noobs, others think it's the trekkers. I even went to one site that said trekkies were the ones losing touch with reality. I've tried to lose touch with reality, but even with all the illicit drugs from my past, I'm nowhere near deluded enough. Finally I was told that trekkies are the ones who comprehensively embrace all the merchandising, all the cosplay. I may not have a copy of Enterprise blueprints, but I have a read a stack of novels and adaptations as high as my chest. Or maybe my abs. Well to my waist at the very least! I've read Ellison's original screenplay and know that GNDN means 'goes nowhere, does nothing'. If you mention the title of a TOS episode, I will know the one in question. I'm as hardcore as it gets, and you can use whatever word you like to describe that.

What started my search is hearing, after all these years, that I'm supposed stop calling myself a trekkie. Sorry, not going to happen. You can call me whatever like, but I was here from the start and I'm invested. I can even paint a fairly decent Captain Pike, seen here throttling a Talosian offscreen. That, to me, is what matters most.
