What's happened to the UK?

Holdfast

I happened to notice the BBC's "most read" news stories right now, and it is an absolute disgrace and appalling reflection on this country. Hopefully by the time you click the link, a more positive vision of the UK will have emerged. :D

But the current stories are:

Tax to pay for fast net access - the heartwarming story of the government taxing everybody in order to subsidise private companies upgrading the telephone network. They're private companies... WTF? Do I get a dividend later as a result of my extra investment?

TV dance man, 73, loses benefits - a potential benefit cheat gets caught by his own stupidity and half the country seems to think it's a shame because he happens to be mildly entertaining on TV

Expenses row MP dropped by Labour - another scumbag politician fiddling the expenses system.

Light sensors cause religious row - two Orthodox Jews complain that automatic light sensors in the stairwell area of their apartment are breaching their Human Rights and taking the case to court. Court. Over automatic light sensors.

BA asks staff to work for nothing - do I need to explain this?

Hydrogen car to be 'open source' - OK, not such a bad story. But the car's exterior design is an eyesore.

Force disciplines police blogger - I see we're in full-on Soviet state mode now - a policeman blogging negative things about the government & its bureaucracy has had his right to privacy overriden and his name plastered in the press "in the public interest"

Grandfather reveals lottery joy - eh, ok, I'll give this one a pass.

'Mass opposition rally' in Tehran - looks like the only place where the population are trying to roll back the power of the state today is Iran. Huh. Irony.

Court quashes murder conviction - let's celebrate because a poor bastard who was wrongly sent down 7 years ago has finally had his conviction overturned.

Lovely.... :borg:

Yes over here this is just the "local news" at 5pm. They save the serious shit for 630PM and call it "World News Tonight."

I'll be going over to the UK soon, well I hope to, hopefully it will be good. I made a trip over in April and the only thing I noticed which wasn't too cool was the amount of cctv cameras. It felt very big brotherish. Apart from some dodgy looking people-ie skin heads it was very pleasant.

My sister commented on that too, she's been over there a few times.

I heard some police dude saying that if the public wanted them to do their job more effectively they would have to accept more cameras. That sounded like a thinly disguised ends justify the means line of reasoning. Makes you wonder whats behind it all.

And I hear that Labour did smashingly well in the elections and that Gordon Brown is the dog's bollocks. :guffaw:

Even more depressingly, the government now wants to subsidise ITV out of the licence fee.

Sod that. If they can't make money by running commercials, it's probably telling them something about the changed nature of the market.

Oooooh I'll be writing about their top story this morning for my newspaper in a discussion piece for our Saturday magazine - carrots and cancer. Well I'm expanding it out into a wider debate... *rolls eyes* the BBC are soooooooooooooo one dimensional (sarcasm) ;)

I know that in the US it's illegal and punishable to publicly criticize the government and expecially the President while in the armed forces.

Maybe the same applies here? Anyone know if such a law exists in Britain?

Apart from that the country do seems to come apart at the seams.. a few years ago i was in Edinburgh for a wedding and got a very positive impression.. though that was Scotland and our hosts (now family) were ace. Very nice city though :techman:

How about the fact that it's true? If the cameras were removed, the level of crime detection and conviction would fall dramatically. Whether that justifies the existence of cameras to each individual person is up to them, but it is a fact. CCTV is regularly an absolutely key piece of evidence in both catching and convicting criminals.

It's more a matter of police accountability. This applies whether they're towing the party line, or speaking out against the system. He's presenting himself in a professional capacity, he should be identifiable, just as if he were doing it in the living room of a victim of crime. It's not illegal for him to criticise, it's merely inappropriate to do so from behind a shield of anonymity, while presenting himself as an officer. If he wants to remain anonymous, he has an easy option: "I'm a cop and I think this" changes to "I think this".

From the BA article: BA's chief executive Willie Walsh has already agreed to work unpaid in July, forgoing his month's salary of £61,000.

I think I just found one place they could make some cutbacks. £61k a month?

It's the meeja, it's a slow news day locally. All the overseas stuff is too hard or too far away.

I do like the 'open source car' story, though.

re: CCTV cameras. after a while you don't even notice them. my mate had to have them pointed out to him by me after they'd put them in. he'd not even noticed they were there even though most are on 12 foot tall green metal poles!

and if you've not done anything wrong, what have you got to hide?

 Yeah I thought the same. Reducing his salary 25% would probably save them as much as this entire 'free month' program

OFT.

Idiot managers!

a) get the company into holes like this in the first place.

b) expect the staff to pick up their mistakes.
