Whatever happened to Trans-Warp drive?

Then again, the TOS Consitution was a magic ship: it could do whatever the plot required it to do speed-wise and weaponry-wise. They never gave it limits.

As well as the NuEnterprise that can make it to Vulcan at the same speed that the Dauntless can travel with Slipstream Drive, approximately 15 light years.

As well as the NX-01, that made it from Earth to Rigel and Kronos in hours at warp 5 in "Broken Bow". And DS9's runabouts, that got the crew from Bajor to Cardassia or Earth in the space of an establishing shot. And the Enterprise-D, which got from Dytallix B to Earth in the blink of an eye in "Conspiracy" ...

It makes the mostly fan idea of regions of space containing previously-charted "subspace shortcuts" or "warp highways" more attractive, IMO. Conversely, the Voyager's unfamiliarity with the Delta Quadrant and its shortcuts would go a long way towards why it would take more than 70 years for her to get home the long way, I suppose...

Obviously, the first time the Excelsior actually went to transwarp everybody on board turned to lizards, so now nobody talks about it. :)

They could have addressed the issue with having built Transwarp conduits for fast travel throughout their local neighbourhood and can make the Federation 8000 light years across too. Although the ships themselves wouldn't be able to travel at Transwarp.

In TOS when those Andromeda galaxy conquerors showed up Kirk was more right about speed even with more recent Trek when he suggested it would take 1000s of years for that Enterprise to reach Andromeda.
