What you did or didn't like about GEN...

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
TNG was supposedly 'at the top of its game' at this time; it could have went farther than seven seasons, but it was decided that the crew should be on the big screen....i.e. 'let's shoot for bigger paychecks!'

Likes:

*Opening
*Demora Sulu
*Seeing Tim Russ
*Seeing Jeanette Goldstein as one of the ENT-B crew
*ENT-D crashdown...

Dislikes:

*The 'Tuesday' bit was pushing the comedy a bit much

*Data and his emotion chip was pushing the *nudge-nudge/wink-wink a bit much

*The Nexus: 'It's like...being wrapped in joy...' (WTF???)

*The ENT-D crew on a ship from the 19th century. If Picard feels that old Earth was barbaric and not as 'evolved' at this time why does he--and his crew--spend SO MUCH TIME in the 19th century and earlier? Those periods were not very racially conscious, or--for lack of a better term--'evolved'....

*B'Etor and Lursa didn't have need to be in the film

*Malcolm McDowell is playing yet ANOTHER villian; he has played the same role many times. For once, I like to see the guy portray a 'good guy'....

*The Picard family tragedy came out of the blue; it doesn't make any sense for those coming into the film. We need a little exposition, or build-up. Otherwise, it doesn't belong in the film. (Otherwise, we wonder why is Picard acting like a baby?)

*Why are Romulans in the picture? They didn't need to be there. (Although, Romulans over Klingons is always greatly appreciated).

*Picard preaches to Kirk about risking his life; Picard shows up in the Nexus....and CAN BE A FIGMENT OF THE NEXUS, but Kirk doesn't question Picard....and goes with him to die, because his--Kirk's horse--doesn't make it across a ravine...

:wtf:

STOCK FOOTAGE!!!???!!!
When the original E went down, it meant something. When this E went down, it meant TPTB wanted a new ship.
Nexus sequence - Kirk acting like an ass and Picard acting like a wuss.

:wtf:
Key point here. The flick failed even worse than TFF in my eyes. I liked Nemesis better. And I don't own that one either.
Sorry Randi.;)

Liked:
-The modified bridge
-Stellar Cartography
-Seeing the Enterprise-B
-The new communicator

Disliked:
-The plot
-The pointless additions to the E-B
-The Duras Sisters
-The Nexus
-Data installing his emotion chip during an investigation
-Blowing up the E-D
-Killing Kirk in the lamest way possible

Why not, you know, NOT kill the beloved and iconic character at all?

The whole movie was pretty bad, but Kirk's death was the unforgivable moment in it. I'm B&B got their asses kicked out for that heresy.

Likes:

Seeing Kirk again.

Finally seeing the Enterprise-D in a feature film.

Malcolm McDowell's Soran was a truly believable and effective villain.

The movie's music.

The destruction of Veridian and the saucer section.

Guinan.

Dislikes:

It was painfully obvious that the lines given to Chekov and Scotty were meant for McCoy and Spock.

The Enterprise-B once I learned a new model was supposed to be built for it but wasn't.

Harriman's complete incompetence.

Kirk's first death.

The crew changing uniforms halfway through the movie for no apparent reason, and changing them to uniforms that were supposedly only for space station personnel.

Ridiculously dark sets that were formerly bright in the TV show.

Lursa and Betor (but at least they died;))

Data's choice of time to install his emotion chip couldn't have been more illogical.

Geordi's senseless torture scene (without his shirt too, for some unknown reason).

Stock footage of a Bird-of-Prey from past films (like we nerds wouldn't know it was stock footage, Berman:rolleyes:)

The completely stupid and senseless destruction of the Enterprise-D.

The whole Nexus plot device really didn't make much sense. If the Nexus really gives you whatever you want and is insanely addictive, then Kirk and Picard should never have been able to leave it on their own.

Kirk's second death.

Leaving Kirk buried under a pile of rocks on some insignificant planet.

Picard and crew's complete lack of interest that the vessel they've been serving on for the past seven years and all their possessions has been completely destroyed.

Likes: The Enterprise-D on the big screen; Guinan; Malcolm McDowell and a decent villain.

Dislikes: Gratuitous and completely pointless destruction of the Enterprise-D; Harriman being portrayed as a complete imbecile (it really beggars belief that - as depicted - he'd progress past ensign, and the tendency to portray Kirk / Picard / whoever and crew as the only competent officers in Starfleet really grates); the "Tuesday" thing was overdone (or is that just around here? :D).

Indifferent to: Kirk's death. I mentioned in another thread that I enjoy the hell out of TOS despite Kirk so the death didn't bother me in the least. In all honesty I was far more concerned about the destruction of the Enterprise-D.

I probably like Generations a bit more than most (mainly because I like watching the TNG crew; I like them) but having said that, it's a very mediocre movie. It's sort of there; it doesn't stand out in any way. "Mediocre" was not a good way for the TNG crew to start on the big screen.

Loved the opening on the Enterprise B. After that it was down-hill.

I still enjoy Generations, but its the one Trek movie that I'm truly disappointed in. The possibilities were endless, and they completely threw it away.

I liked the movie but I found the whole idea of The Nexus a little too abstract. How did Kirk enter the Nexus, how did Picard find him so easily there (there should have been be millions of "overjoyed" humans and aliens running around :)), why wasn't he "brainwashed" by the Nexus the same way Kirk was.

I think they could have found some other way to bring Kirk to the 24th century such as cryostasis for example.

That's it!!! Little brother, YOU'RE PUNISHED!!! GO TO YOUR ROOM!!!!

*sigh*
I love Generations. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT~

I pretty much disagree with everything Joel Kirk said. All his dislike points were things that i loved!

Gawd, i LOVE Lursa and B'etor in this movie!!!

I laugh every single time i see Data drink that awful drink in Ten Forward.

"Wrapped in joy". Seriously, for me, that was perfect.

Malcolm McDowell, perfect in the role. So he plays a lot of villains...that doesn't mean he can't be the villain here.

DonaIago...stock footage? I've seen every Trek movie at least a dozen times and I didn't realize they used stock footage. So that didn't bother me at all.

Nexus Kirk/Picard. I love it. Can't find a single thing i don't like about it....except for ..how the hell do they get OUT of the Nexus? That's always bugged me, but i came up with my own little bit of fanwank about what the nexus is, so i can deal with it.

Kirk's death. Look, it was time. I don't like it any more than anyone else, but I'd rather see Kirk dying while saving lives than of old age and dementia. People have a problem with the fact that he didn't die in a big way. I thought this way was perfect. It was a very personal moment between him and Picard, and Kirk was very much in character in his final moments. He saved millions of lives (or was it billions? I don't remember)! Ok, not in some huge ship battle but in a hands on way. I thought him knowing he is about to die, and handling it with grace and dignity was more moving than if he had been on a ship that blew up (or something like that).

Kirk being left under the rocks...we don't really know that for sure, do we? Picard may have buried him because he didn't know when he would be rescued...and rather than leaving Kirks body out in the sun to decompose, he buried him in such a way to keep his dignity. It would be nothing to beam Kirk out of that makeshift grave (and in fact, leaving Kirk's pin on the rocks the way he did may have made it easy to locate the body and beam it out).

Yep, there are flaws in Generations just like there are in every other Trek movie. I can live with them, just as i do with all the others. I love Generations!

The BoP explosion in TUC was a high-point of that film for me. When I said I was hoping for something equally cool here...that's not what I meant at all. :scream:

I never understood the hate and apart from the LAME LAME restock footage, which for a movie to use like that is just piss poor. Also the lack of explaning why Riker didn't just remodulate the shields...it would of took a single line after the first volley (Shields are offline) to fix that too.

I don't mind Kirk dying because the character made it quite clear he didn't want to grow old doing nothing and then simply dying. Kirk always wanted to die in the line of duty and yes it could of been more epic but he gave his life to save not only the crew of USS Enterprise but also saved a planet full of humaniod people on it and beat the bad guy.

The whole movie was pretty bad, but Kirk's death was the unforgivable moment in it. I'm B&B got their asses kicked out for that heresy.

Confusing sentence structure aside, I think I know what you mean here, so let me retort:

A. Don't forget about Ron Moore. He wrote Generations as well.
B. I can't fault the top Trek brass entirely for the ills of what the story had. The studio basically gave Berman a laundry list of what needed to happen in the film. The death of Kirk was on that list.

I think Berman was the one who cooked up that laundry list. The studio just wanted something that would bring a profit.

What you think doesn't make a difference. Braga and Moore mentioned on the GEN commentary that it was the studio that handed them a list of stuff that needed to happen in the film.
