What Would Your Reaction Be If Aliens Turned Up One Day...?

Since I am from the South (Tennessee) it would be the end of the red neck Southern Baptist and the end of the Republican party (as we understand them) in Tennessee. True, they will keep fighting that they are not real. So the alians will have to blast them (not kill them) with their phasers and you could well turn their viewpoint with a few.

With me I would say, hey guys lets be friends.

Why would aliens be the end of the Republican party? So are you saying Democrats are Pro-Alien? I am confused

I'd probe them slowly and softly while playing Barry White.

They've traveled millions of light years to destroy the human race, and all you can do is subject them to the Walrus of Love while giving them an anal probe?

Sounds like one of Quark's dodgy holosuite programs.

I think my reaction would depend largely on how they make their appearance. If, as the OP suggests, they come here as in "Independence Day," (no attempt at communication, positioning dozens of ships over our largest cities) I'd be afraid (yeah, I'm a sci-fi fan and I believe in the existence of E-T life, but I'm not a ninny about it).

However, one or two smaller ships with relatively small crews, I'd be thrilled (and fearful for their safety).

They've already been/are here.

Now it's just a matter of whether they see us fit to make
official first contact with or destroy us, or if our Government
fucks up as usual and screws us all.

1- Kill them
2- Steal their technodoodads
3- Conquer known universe.
If it's like Independence Day, as the OP says, then I'm with you.

Otherwise, I'm just going to be glad I'm old and lived most of my life relatively unencumbered by an overlord. There are potentially billions of planets just in the galaxy here with intelligent life older than ours; if they're capable of space travel, they've probably already been here.

My very first reaction? I knew it!. Then it would depend: if they were friendly, then very, very excited and happy.

I'd be like: "Oh, okay." and carry on with my life as normal.

I would be fascinated to learn of their evolutionary history, though. :bolian:

I'd like to think I'd react well under to the news, but in all probability the most natural human reaction would be stunned disbelief followed by panic.

How would it end Southern Baptist religion and the Republican party?

They're both based on very conservative, insular, xenophobic, ethnocentric understandings of the nature of the world. If confronted with direct evidence that human life is not the center of existence and that massive social change is unavoidable, their entire philosophy collapses.

Huh. I've lived in the South and am a Republican. I did not realize these things about myself, but it sounds like you've got things all figured out. Thanks for pointing out how closed-minded we all are!

Perhaps your generalizations are a bit unfounded?

most religions would be thrown into shock by the alien religion or lack of religion.
Even if Xianity is mostly right, it would unlikely that when god interacted with the aliens in the past that their psychology gave thema need for the exact same ten comandments, that their prophets had the exact same names and that god send his son to them and his name happend to be Jesus.
And if he did . . . that would cause problems for Xians.
What does it mean if Jesus came to them first? What does it mean if he came to them after his death? What does it mean if he was on thier planet during the exact time he was on eartth?
