i think i'll be in shock at first then realise, wow extraterrestial intelligent life!!!

the general public would panic like in that film, only because they dont know how to deal with such a thing, but i think most of us on here and sci-fi fans around the would be able to cope with such a situation only because of what we've seen on star trek etc.

I'd be fascinated, and possibly befriend them if they're in any way insectile or reptilian for the sake of being able to hang out with them...

But I wouldn't be afraid of them- more of people's reactions and what that would provoke. Live to far out of the way to be a priority target, you see.

Huh. I've lived in the South and am a Republican. I did not realize these things about myself, but it sounds like you've got things all figured out. Thanks for pointing out how closed-minded we all are!
