What would you use the holodeck for?

Would you use the holodeck for sexual purposes?

A list of individuals that used the holodeck for sexual purposes (off the top of my head);
Riker, Picard, Geordi, Barclay, Dax, Kira, Quark, Tuvok, Seven, Tom (kinda), and The Doctor (kinda).
Beverly Crusher just masturbates in her quarters.

You could use the holodeck to have sex with your real flesh-and-blood partner in all kinds of places you couldn't otherwise visit.
If your partner were in a far away city, and you both had a holodeck, you could have sex with each other.

If you were a true narcissist, you could have sex with yourself.

:)

I'm going to some time in the later Mesozoic era. Either that or I'm going to Narnia or Middle Earth.

I would chill with Barclay on the holodeck and help beat up the bridge crew, he's got quite the imagination. Then I would pass it around to all lower crew members and it would go viral making Barclay an instant celebrity.

We saw Riker suggest (2) in TNG

How many of your attached/married guys still look at porn?

If you do, you'd have sex with virtual babes in the HD. If you never look at porn and are only ever sexual with your lady and no one else, then I can believe you'd probably never use the holodeck in that way on your own.

Little question: for how many hours can you use continuously the holodeck?

For a ship with 1.000 people it seems strange that you can always find one unused....

I always figured you'd be able to reserve time in advance on some sort of schedule if you want to use the holodeck for a significant span of time.

It seemed that Barclay spent several hours everyday in the holodeck.

How many holodecks are there on Enteprise D? There is a canonical number?

According to MA, there isn't. We only know that there are "several", at least one of which extends vertically over more than one deck.

Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise Haynes Manual (yes I know) mentions 16 holodecks.

If I lived on a starship without seeing the surface of a planet for several months and the only other options of entertainment were the poetry of Data or the plays of Dr Crusher, I could kill for some hours in the holodeck...

Edit. If you accept the number of 16 holodecks and that at any given moment there are ~670 people in their free time, you can satisfy the holo-needs of only 2.4 % of aforementioned people.

I'm surprised that aren't lines outside of holodecks...

Who says there aren't other forms of entertainment on the Enterprise? on contrary there seems to be sporting facilities (like the one Picard and Jono played that weird squahs-like game in Suddenly Human) the arboretum (which seems to be large enough to allow Riker and random female crewmember to fool around in without being disturbed) I think the pilot mentions some sort of swimming pool.
There is some sort of private holograms you can watch in your quarters (Riker does so in Haven, despite all the insistence later that television is dead and gone) the ship computer offers free and unlimited access to the literature, media and trivia of countless civilizations (imagine that wiki walk) I assume there are classes like in community centres, the Ten Forward exists, people meet for card and board games and apparently some sort of virtual game also still exists. It's not like there's only the holodeck.

What is unrealistic is that there's always a holodeck available when the main characters need one.
Though perhaps using the holodeck extensively and on your own in a little bit frowned upon, because it carries the stigma of getting addicted to it, like Barclay?

You are right, but now I remember that holodecks are also used for romantic dates. And I suppose that in these cases you need them for a couple of hours at least (or more!)

I'm really surprised that in universe you don't have to wait for days to use an holodeck....

I'd sleep under a different set of stars every night.
For a moment, I thought you said "I would sleep with a different set of stars every night".

Lol, Lara Croft on Monday, Deanna Troi on Tuesday, Orion slave girl on Wednesday, Jessica Alba on Thursday, Zoe Saldana on Friday.

Fair points. Though it could also be used for threesomes with a holo partner, etc.

Or just general orgies I guess!

Tbh, I think Deanna Troi would feature a lot in my holo programs.

Imagine this or two of these greeting you every day:

Good points!!

I'm sure they added more on the Enterprise E.

I guess sometimes, people would use them at the same time for sports or party recreation.

And I think there were other forms of entertainment - Ten Forward, a fencing room, target practice.. erm.. Counsellor Troi, etc.

Maybe some holodecks could run stories where different people could go in without interfering with another's experience. Though i have only seen this on DS9 or Voyager.

Yeah, there should be at least 100 holodecks for a big starship like that!

Agreed there are multiple forms of entertainment.

I think there are also several holodecks, and though 16 was the number given in canon, in practice, or certainly on the new Enterpise E, there must be more. There should be more!

Indeed, there are other sports, music, social and recreational facilities onboard. There are also holographic projectors in other parts of the ship.

I think they must have to reserve time for the holodeck. Or maybe officers get priority at a holodeck on a different deck.

It's free to use for anyone though I thought. Sure you would need to post a Counsellor Troi session to er.. unwind and relax.

I think on Voyager, they had to wait and reserve.

But also the Enterprise often visits Starbases or Federation planets where there must be holodecks too.

Agreed, wonder why there isn't a line of people waiting. I think they would put a holodeck next door to Troi's office for easy stress relief after seeing her.

Agreed.

When Barclays was spending too much time in the holodeck, the only reservation was that it isn't a a healthy thing to live so long in a fantasy and not that he was abusing a finite resource.

I was more wondering about why Lwaxana Troi could have had one rump/mud bath after the other with Alexander without having to wait for it, but now that I think of that episode it does seem like she had reserved the Holodeck in advance.

I wonder if it was free for everyone, though. I'm sure children (an possibly adolescents) need parental supervision/admission to use it. Maybe they mostly/solely entered it for field trips with school or the occasional treat? I remember a little girl who was the focus of an episode (the invisible friend one?)who webt to the arboretum in her freetime instead of the holodeck.

That being said I now wonder if you could reserve it for children's birthday parties and weddings. The would-be wedding in Haven was set up in a room that wasn't the Holodeck, maybe because it wasn't available on short notice?

Might be hard to accept, but a portion of the Enterprise's crew and civilians could have no interest in the holodecks.

As I understand the holodeck, if two people (on the holodeck) walk away from each other, at some point they would each be in their own "holo-bubble." They might seem hundreds of feet apart, but really they're only ten feet or so.

So, if you walk into a seemingly empty holodeck, there could be a dozen people in there, each in their own "bubble."

Initially your little bubble is of a large empty holodeck.

:)
