Yes, that would have been an an interesting varaiation, and a great way to expand upon an otherwise "barely explored" species.
So many possibilities. First Dorothy Fontana would write "Joanna" the way she originally wanted to and help flesh out the McCoy background. Maybe we could get her to find the time to do another Vulcan-centric episode and see more of Vulcan and Spock's family (something like "Yesteryear" that they could afford budgetwise.) The Romulans are just begging for another episode or two. (Likewise, the Andorians and Tellarites.) The supporting characters need to each have a episode showcasing them. I've always been curious about this story idea about Uhura and McCoy being stranded on a planet where slavery is reversed. I wouldn't have minded going back to see the Fabrini on the new homeworld and how McCoy deals with Natira again. Maybe David Gerrold's original idea for "More Tribbles, More Troubles" where the glommers get on board the Enterprise and start feeding on the crewmen as well as the tribbles. That storyline really got cleaned up for the Saturday morning cartoon audience. Although it may have turned out too much like "The Devil in the Dark" without the clever idea of the Horta having a valid reason to strike out at everyone. We definitely needed to find a way around Shatner's demand for screentime and have a really good Spock/McCoy episode on some planet somewhere. Speaking of Shatner, how about that episode he was to have written if NBC had picked up the option for 2 more episodes during season 3?? Roddenberry once said that he wished that he could write as poetic as Shatner's outline was.
Definitely another Gorn story! An adventure set either on the Klingon home world returning both Kang and Kor to the Trek universe or a story set on one of their slave worlds! Kirk and crew on earth in the 23rd century sounds good too! I suppose Mudd has to come back too and more Romulans of course!

I think Frieberger takes a measure of unfair criticism. GR made himself absent and D.C. Fontana left. Justman eventually bailed as well. Who was left on the creative staff to help guide the ship?
If GR had been more on hand that alone might have helped. It also might have helped in terms of keeping Fontana and Justman onboard.

True that. Lets not forget slashing the budget didnt help either. A bigger budget wouldve helped. The actors pay kept going up but the budget kept getting slashed. Its like working n getting a 20 cent raise but everything keep going up way above that cost of living.
Given what Mr. Freiberger did to the second season of Space:1999 (at the time just 6 years after his Star Trek stint) - I'd say the criticism he gets is well earned. Personally I also never thought GR himself was good for Star Trek. IMO the person who really made the majority of the original Star Trek most know and love is: Gene L. Coon. <--- If they could have gotten him back for a 4th season...

And especially this. In fact, if they couldn't recapture the feel of the first season -- I'm not sure I would really think a 4th season would add much.

If Lucy had managed to hold on even for one more year that might have made a difference in the show. Maybe the second season budget doesn't get cut. Or if when Paramount buys out Desilu they have a more friendly view towards TOS and don't slash the budget as well as don't poison the working atmosphere with uber corporate mentality.
Next if NBC kept their word and gave the show a better timeslot which convinces GR to stay more hands on or even actually produce the third season. This alone might help convince both Fontana and Justman to stay on.
If those changes had happened the latter half of season two along with season three as a whole likely would have looked different. Some of the stories greenlighted might not have been produced in favour of better stories.
Given these changes, and maybe they see an modest improvement in ratings because of the better timeslot might set the stage for a fourth season.
Now we have an interesting scenario. Because if TOS comes back for a fourth season is there a possibility they can benefit from the spill off interest in the Apollo program with Apollo 11 having just landed on the Moon in July, 1969 and TOS' fourth season starting about two months later?

Updated displays and controls, running the command-line version of LCARS 1.0, or at least something equal to what we saw in The Andromeda Strain, for example.
Ok, it would probably have to be animated because real ASCII terminals would have cost more than everything in 1970.

I wouldve loved to see the following if they had been a season 4:
- an episode each with:
Harry mudd
Romulans
Klingons
Andorians
Terralites
Vulcans
Specific episode plots:
- time travel story to "present day" earth
- episodes dealing with the secondary cast
- two parter
- a good horror themed episode
- a good comedy/light hearted episode
GR was good but it was only when he had good showrunners to back him up that the show was the best. Most of season 1 and half of season 2 were good because of that. Season 3 was so miss rather than hit. But thank god we did get a season 3 though.

As mentioned above, more women. By the late 1960s, women in professional jobs was no longer a radical concept. Star Trek was pitched with 1/3 women in the Enterprise crew, but we hardly ever saw women unless their falling in love with some guest star was a plot point.
Yes, many of the animated series episode concepts were good, but the half hour format and Saturday morning time slot kept them from being executed well. I'd love to have seen an hour treatment of Niven's Slaver story.

No episode sequels or rehashes (as much as I enjoy Continues, it does this far too much), no big changes to the fabric of the show (as the Phase II revival was to be). Just more larger-than-life Star Trek adventures.
