What will the next decade bring?

Let us speculate what the years 2010 to 2019 will bring.

What do they mean for you? Where might you be in ten years time? Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the decade ahead?

Speculate what will happen with energy prices. With the current plans to build umpteen more nuclear reactors and wind farms in the UK, do we anticipate good or bad times ahead?

What about the global warming saga, and what conclusions do we anticipate here?

Considering this past decade's obsession with security and surveillance, our flirtation with mass cctv, identity cards, and vehicle tracking technology, for example. How do you anticipate this stuff, and our feelings about this stuff, evolving over the next decade?

What about global economics? How will it be affected by the things happening in the middle east? Who controls the oil and who needs it? With countries emerging from the third world, strengthening their economies and better able to bid for resources, maybe some new alliances will be forged, and some old rivalries possibly reemerging.

What will be the progress of music and movies and video games?

What new technology will we see? How much better and smaller and lower power will computers get, and how will it happen? What about these plans to go to the moon and mars? Will anything become of that? Will microsoft ever get to windows 10, or will the unix derivatives have taken over by then?

Will trekbbs still be here in 10 years :p ... and how might the internet be different?

Apologies if there are already too many of these decade threads!

Misery, more "LOL THE CARBONS WILL KILL US ALL" propaganda (and "LOL TEH GLOBAL WAFFLES" still won't have happened despite what the propaganda tells us), mandatory biometric ID cards (that they will force us to pay for ourselves), more awful autotuned pop music and remakes of movies (eventually they'll start doing remakes of the previous remakes), the internet will be heavily policed (to match the real world) and all computers will come with built-in, mandatory hardware keyloggers that send your keystrokes to police databases regardless of what OS you're using.

My top 10 list for the next decade:

1) Global climate change will be the accepted fact among the general population
2) Earth like planets will be directly imaged and some will be determined to be habitable
3) However, no detection of intelligent life this decade, perhaps next.
4) The current recession will become ancient history, a distant blip.
5) We still won't have returned astronauts to the moon, much less Mars.
6) However, rovers will have found evidence of past or current life on Mars near the northern pole. This should cause a big Mars push in the following decade.
7) We will still heavily depend on oil. Although by the end of the decade we might start seeing the first signs of change, maybe. Biggest reduction in fossil fuel consumption will be through increasing efficiency.
8) More intrusions on privacy, CCTV will increase. Hard to argue against the crime reduction. National IDs, yes. But, these won't cause much outcry.
9) The biggest privacy controversy will be AI programs that mine publically available data and internet transactions looking for patterns.
10) Computers will be predictably smaller and more powerful. We expect that so not shocking. Not this decade at least. Later, we'd have to wonder about artificial personalities.

Mr Awe

A push will begin in earnest to convert the General Aviation fleet to biofuel. The days of leaded fuel in the skies are numbered.

I'm thinking and hoping that as you now essentially can do anything in film and games, a push towards more story oriented focus and gameplay focus in the case of the games will occur.

Cars will get more and more efficient, especially after (in my opinion) the Chevrolet Volt will be a big hit. Hopefully this also mean that auto developers won't forget the performance market and make more efficient engines for that level as well, Direct Injection V8s and so on.

Digital media will increase even further.

A new freeway around and not trough Stockholm will be built. Also a road will be built around my town to decrease gridlock.

Global economics will get better once people get over this stupid shit with being overly careful since "it's a recession".

Computer will have insane amounts of power towards the end of the decade. The increase since I bought my compy seven years ago is staggering.

Ravescene, Jr. ;)

Nice plan!

On a personal level for me, I hope the next decade sees me still living in this house. This decade has been one of major changes for me (stressful job, little miss trampledamage, move to Canada, young master trampledamage) so I'm hoping the next decade will involve the family trampledamage staying put and living the quiet life! By 2010 both kids will be in high school, so getting them to that stage will be plenty enough work!

I would love to see a fully functioning space station, with a permanent population, being used as a staging post for further manned expeditions into space. And a base on the Moon too please :)

The DC metro will be extended out to Washington Dulles and the belt-line will be constructed.

....Nah, who am I kidding.

Hopefully, free energy, and the abolition of the evil necessity of working to live, if we're lucky.

How about the flying cars, moving sidewalks (A must for a guy in a wheelchair, I'm tired of using my arms to push myself everywhere, I want to be COMPLETELY lazy!), and flights to the moon that we were promised would be a part of our lives by 2000?

I would love all of that.

....Nah, who am I kidding.

People you meet ON the DC Metro will not be meaner and nastier than your average axe murderer.

....Nah, who am I kidding. :vulcan:

(note, Lind, this is not an insult to you, it's based on my own personal experience)

Everything from 2000-2009 + 20 Mana and 10 Experience Points.

How about the flying cars

Plenty of small planes around today. They're more expensive than they should be, and they can't all land in your driveway, but they fill essentially the flying car role.
