Indeed Titanic came out on Dec. 19,1997 and stayed at No. 1 until Lost In Space knocked it off in April of 1998, The Dark Knight had the benefit of a stronger opening weekend.

I would say that is probably close to the truth. "Titanic" seemed to be around for half the year. TDK is not even a couple of months old now. What made the former film such an enigma was its legs. It was like one of those freaky Ethiopian marathon runners who get their stride in about hour six.


Edit to add: Damn, I gotta start checking that there are other pages - my above response was to the poster who said a radio station claimed TDK made its money faster.

Now I also heard that TDK reached $500 mil. twice as fast as Titanic did...but that was the same radio station, so take it with a grain of salt.

Per Box Office Mojo, it took Titanic 98 days to reach $500,000,000. It made it to that mark on March 26, 1998.

The Dark Knight reached the same number after 45 days of release. So, actually less than half the time it took Titanic.

The problem is Titanic made money with a steady stream of customers (and did even better overseas). The Dark Knight continues to drop off.

I don't understand that IMDB list. It places Get Smart as having earned over a billion dollars worldwide, but I haven't seen financial success like that reported anywhere else on the internet or in the trades.

It looks like they formula for that almost counts old+new money earned for each weekend of Get Smart, but that can't be right, because then the numbers for The Dark Knight and Titanic would be INSANE if they were calculated that way, and they're not.

I was about to comment about Get Smart. Crap almost a billion over seas? How did that happen and no one talked about it? Thats huge only Titanic has done better.

It nocked the last lord of the rings movie off of second place, a good thing. But geez that movie didn't even make 200 mill here. What do foriegners like so much about it? It looks like another cheezy attempt at comady by the "Rock."

The thing is, foreigners haven't liked it that much. Both Box Office Mojo and The Numbers report far, far, far lower international numbers than they have at IMDB (even the breakdown at IMDB doesn't support the final number).

It HAS to be an error.

Looking at the numbers for the box office performance at Wikipedia, I guess they just add a zero too many to the international figures at IMDB.

Currently, TDK should be at no. 7 at IMDB, I think.

It would seem Get Smart just lost a shipload of cash. Either that or the guys at IMBD corrected their calculation error.

Okay so TDK is going into the weekend at just a tad under $519m. Based on its drop for the last few weeks it is set to make about $3m this weekend. That means it will be at around $522m come close of trade Sunday.

That means the following weekend, myself and those of us who voted for $525m will be proven correct.
