What Will TDK's Final (Domestic) Box Office Total Be?

What Will TDK's Final (Domestic) Box Office Be?

I'm simply hoping this'll finally beat Titanic, I don't care what total it takes to do that :D.

Although I sincerely hope this will happen, I'm almost certain that it won't. Titanic had a total worldwide gross of $1,842,879,955. It grossed approximately $600,000,000 in the states, but overseas returns accounted for a large chunk of its cash flow. Conversely, The Dark Knight, while performing impressively in the U.S., has made about $128 million overseas. The breakdown for TDK is currently, 71% domestic gross and 29% foreign gross. The numbers do not add up in a promising way for TDK I'm afraid.

Nothing will come near to "Titanic" for a long time. I have said it here and elsewhere many times - "Titanic" was an enigma - it should not ahve happened. It made the money it did because(immature basement-dwelling fanboy bitching and bleeting aside), the film crossed all demographics and social groups. Add to that it was AN EVENT MOVIE - you HAD to go and see it and throw in a good dose of publicity and you have a MONSTER hit.

"Titanic" did the unthinkable(and the unrepeatable)in that not only did it have legs, some weekends its gross ACTUALLY INCREASED. That DOES NOT HAPPEN. Yet it did with that film.

We will probably not see another film achieve this feat and certainly not when you adjust the amount for inflation - I can only guess that a film would have to make somewhere near $660m today to "equal" Cameron's hit.

Any box office record is meant to be broken as all records will be but time will tell if The Dark Knight can do it but personally I doubt if it can come close.

Granted this is not adjusted for inflation, but according to IMDB the all-time box office hits, worldwide:
Code:
1. Titanic (1997) $1,835,300,000
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $1,129,219,252
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $1,060,332,628
4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) $968,657,891
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) $958,404,152
6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) $937,000,866
7. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) $922,379,000
8. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) $921,600,000
9. Jurassic Park (1993) $919,700,000

Keep in mind, also, that Titanic was in the theaters for several months. It was enarly a year between its release and it's video release. A movie staying in the theaters for several, several months is almost unheard of these days unless the movie maintains high, very high, levels of audiances.

Rarely happens these days.

Here is the ranking (after adjusted for inflation) - Domestic only since world wide figures are unavailable or impossible to approximate.

1 Gone with the Wind MGM $1,430,476,000 1939
2 Star Wars Fox $1,261,086,700 1977
3 The Sound of Music Fox $1,008,300,900 1965
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Uni. $1,004,328,700 1982
5 The Ten Commandments Par. $927,480,000 1956
6 Titanic Par. $908,688,900 1997
7 Jaws Uni. $906,798,000 1975
8 Doctor Zhivago MGM $878,879,000 1965
9 The Exorcist WB $782,826,200 1973
10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Dis. $771,720,000 1937

While these figures may not be 100% accurate (the grosses of some of these movies are the total of grosses from multiple releases i.e. Star Wars, Snow White, etc) but I think it's at least good enough to gave an impression about where Titanic stand in all time figures.

While checking BOM last night I noticed that LOTR:ROTK was actually in cinemas for SIX MONTHS. That figure alone is INCREDIBLE. Add to that the fact that its weekly gross didn't dip below the standard 50% from the previous week UNTIL ITS TWENTY FOURTH WEEK OF RELEASE and you have a statistic that made me go,

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?

Seriously - for all the kids that don't know what that means - that is FREAKING AMAZING.

Holy crap, I may have to revise my prediction of $475 Million. According to Yahoo, TDK has made a total domestic gross of well over $300 Million in just 2 weeks!

I see the drop on Monday from last week was over 57%. That may indicate a lot of the people who really wanted to see it have already been. The pre-release hype coupled with the whole deification of St. Heath may have caused the film to be heavily front-loaded.

Only time will tell but I think the fact that this film has a low re-watchability factor may also hurt it long term. It's just way too grim for average people to sit through again and again.

550 million dollars I'd say. It looks like the film has peaked (at an incredible 325 million dollars as of Tuesday), and although it will continue to take in millions in the coming days and weeks, those numbers are going to get smaller and smaller.

If The Dark Knight passes $250,000,000 in domestic (U.S.) box office by the end of Summer 2008 (September 21, 2008), I will personally buy a Blu-ray DVD of the film for JacksonArcher.
I officially congratulate JA for winning our bet.
JA, I'm gonna need your shipping address when the Blu-ray is released.

Who knew that The Dark Knight would reach Iron Man's total after two weekends? :wtf:

Wow, good on you sir for remembering that and honestly chalking up to it. :techman:
I guessed $525 mil but I'm really starting to wonder if it might just make more than that. Worldwide at this point may even break $1 billion!

$10 million on the second Monday is pretty good, I'd say. My only hope from Monday was for The Dark Knight to break double digits in the millions and the film did it. I expected the numbers to drop the next few days, but with a healthy third weekend (~$40 million).

I originally voted for $525 M, but I think I will have to revise my vote down to $475 M. It is doing well, but not well enough to crack $500 M. The numbers for this weekend could pick it back up though.

I was wondering what people thought about TDK vs. Mummy 3. Will Batman come out on top for a third weekend?

It's making about half per theatre what it made a week previous. It'll make more money this weekend (although it will be a close call between The Dark Knight and The Mummy 3), but the downward trend continues.

My prediction of 550 million dollars this morning may have been a little high. We'll see.

There's a whole thread on that question, but it's probably on the second page by now. It's worth taking a look at.

As I said in that thread and in my previous post, I think The Dark Knight will make ~$40 million and it'll beat out The Mummy 3 which will bomb terribly.

Rob Cohen is directing this new Mummy movie, so it depends on how many people want to see an Xtreme Mummy. :p

Also, I saw Batman again today, but the stupid ticket counter guy gave me two tickets for some PG family movie, so that's the cost of two matinee tickets that won't be going to The Dark Knight.
