What were your first thoughts on 'Discovery'?

I was looking forward to it. Got Netflix, worked out if I had enough download (I have a metered plan). Read up on it here. Made sure we dragged out the TV trays and could watch it eating dinner :o

The music score I liked, the opening sequence didn't seem finished to me. I liked the scene between Georgiou and Michael. The subtitles with the Klingons I thought was hard work. It was dark, like visually so that was hard work too. To be honest I didn't feel like I was watching "Discovery" until I saw the star ship 'Discovery'. Same goes with identifying the lead. Lorca seemed to be the natural fit. I watched with a critical eye mainly because I thought I might be giving feed back on it. Previously other Trek I have just watched kind of organically (and probably enjoyed it more because of that).

My first impression was favorable, but not overwhelmingly so.

I thought it looked fantastic, and I liked Georgeau, Michael, and Saru. I was extremely relieved that it was absolutely not just another VOY or ENT. I would not have watched it if that were the case. So, I was very happy that it was going for something different. Ultimately, even when it fell on its face a bit, I really appreciated that it was trying.

I do remember being somewhat frustrated that there were obvious things they were dropping the ball on that they could have easily done better with.

I very quickly learned to like the characters and the TOS backstory elements. So, while it's not perfect, I find it the most entertaining Trek has been since TOS and selected pockets of DS9

I wasn't super crazy about the new Klingons, but I loved everything else and thought those first two episodes were intense and thrilling as hell.

About the Klingons, I wonder will there be a story about how they look different than the Klingons we're used to, something like what 'Enterprise' did.

But, if it is a reboot then there's no need for that. Honestly, I'm still not completely sure if 'Discovery' is a reboot. As far as I know it is not a reboot. :)

I think it would be better if the Klingons spoke English.... Maybe I just don't like their dialect? :)

I think it's a reboot. But officially, it isn't. Season 2 even has an episode with a "previously on..." featuring footage from "The Cage", where everything looks different. Then in the episode proper we see different, reimagined versions of aliens from that episode. They just pretend it's the same. In other words, their standards of continuity are far lower than mine. It reminds me a lot of the X-Men movies, continuity-wise. Massive changes, but it's somehow the same.

"Sometimes it's wise to keep our expectations low... That way we're never disappointed"
Actually I was disappointed by 1 & 2 episodes. GoT in Trek? OMG. Lorca saved season 1 to me. And I had expectations for season 2 because they announced Mount as Pike. I believed in Mount's superb acting skill and wanted to look at him even if a scenario would be weak (like in Inhumans... have seen it twice :shifty:). Since Pike's first appearance I breathed out "Wow, my good old-fashioned Trek is returned!"

I'm trying to remember back that far...

(they say the memory is the first thing to go with age, but I think it's your prostate)
:nyah:

My first thought during that first scene was to recheck the title of the show because I thought I must have been watching star wars..
Oh... right, because desert + desert-appropriate clothing = Star Wars.

Well, this is going to confuse the hell out of you:

I still think this is the best trailer we've had for anything Trek. You can see the initial reactions in this thread - starting after post #236 when the trailer went up.

That 2nd vid must be location locked, it won't play for me. (USA)

so glad to find this thread. i stopped watching Disco because it didn't seem like Roddenberry world much at all.. more like a war driven type series that i feel like i see everywhere and don't watch

But I Want to like it! So I was hoping someone who loves star trek DS9/NG/TOS..meaning, someone not new to star trek...could tell me what I'm missing and how I could come round and enjoy Disco?

:-/

One of the early reviews called Discovery "DS9 reborn" and I agreed when I watched it. A difference between DS9 and Discovery is that DS9 begins with optimism and then forces everyone into war, and Discovery is the other way around, beginning with war and showing optimism build back up through it. I wonder how you would feel about DS9 if you had seen some of the darkest episodes first and then stopped watching.

My first impressions regarding Star Trek: Discovery was that it was better than Enterprise right out of the gate and then, after few episodes, that it was superior to the Kelvin Timeline movies. I felt the look was very good and the tone was darker with a more elevated dramatic sensibility. Still not a fan of the Klingon look - not that I feel it violates canon or anything, I just think it looks cheap and ugly. Others may love it and more power to them.

By the end of season one, I had STD ranked just behind TOS, DS9 and TNG. Ahead of: VOY and ENT.
