What We Left Behind - Documentary Update Confirms *Some* HD Remastering

I appreciate Behr's reasoning! Am looking forward to when it's released, proper.

But why is he wearing a shirt that reads "BUCKET" on it?

Advertising! Soon every Trek fan will want one and guess who knows where to find them and is getting a percentage of the profit for ever "BUCKET" shirt sale.:)

When it's ready. They want to make sure it's completely ready before setting a date. Obviously they don't want to set up expectations and then not be able to deliver because they're still working in the HD stuff.

DS9-R would indeed recoup costs, for home video AND streaming venues, but would simply take a little more time.

DS9 is an old show and doesn't have nearly the following to justify it, to say nothing of the all new realities of the current media landscape.

They would never recoup the costs. Barely anyone buys physical media anymore and soon rather than later, CBS is going to pull all the Trek series from other streaming outlets and put them solely on CBS All Access. So they'd be losing that revenue, as well, and they'd just be giving DS9 (and all Trek) to themselves, so no real profit there.

Physical media is going to make a comeback I predict. The internet is on shaky ground these days for many reasons and soon it's going to be more expensive to use the internet than the stuff you can actually buy and own. Especially when the find a away to stop things like illegal downloading. Who knows how many people don't pay anything to watch their shows and movies. Once that goes away those people will need a new way to get it.

Anyone have a shipping notice from this project? I had a email with a tracking number but I wonder if it's a badge or something as part of the HI-Def hero and not the Blu-ray.

Newest update:

A Peek Behind the (Digital) Curtain

Yes, we know what you're all thinking...

Where in the world is that Deep Space Nine Documentary?

Well, we can finally share that this week, we're over with our friends at CBS Digital making our clips from Deep Space Ninelook even more fantastic in High Definition.

Our very own Ira Steven Behr ventured where few have gone before to give you a special look at the mountains of film (and hard work!) it takes to accomplish even just our limited remastering:

To view this content we will need your consent to set third party cookies.
For more detailed information, see our cookies page.

That's right. We're nearly through the heavy research-and-scanning stage of our remaster, and with just a few (hundred) more film rolls ahead of us, we're hard at work replacing the 20+ minutes of new HD sequences -- spanning ALL SEVEN seasons of the original run of Deep Space Nine!

We could spend a whole update simply raving about the look and feel of the new film transfer... but until you see it yourself, words just can't do it justice.

And you WILL see it. Sooner than you may think.

So then, why no official release date yet?

The restoration process alone is a HUGE undertaking -- after all your support in funding this expensive endeavor, it has taken months of work from the CBS Digital team to coordinate, research, find, ship, scan and deliver the original film negatives for us, and more time from our team to clean up, color, and polish the resulting images (and even re-create a handful of effects!).

While we're still waiting on final elements to arrive and distribution details to lock firmly into place, we don't want to promise any deadlines we can't meet with the film not yet entirely complete.

However, that doesn't mean we don't have a plan in place that puts you, our most important supporters and DS9 Ambassadors, right at the forefront. We've got BIG news in the works and expect you'll be hearing much more from us later this month.

In the meantime, keep trekkin' on!

I don't see why they can't upgrade a few episodes from the first few seasons of DS9 which were produced during TNG's run, before cgi and spaces battles were heavily incorporated into DS9. If they need a donation for that, I'm all in! Besides the pilot, I could see a "Best of DS9" bluray release of Ira Behr's personal favorite episodes, which he has listed as The Nagus, Duet, and Past Tense.

Since they're going back to the film, it would be cool if they'd keep the video from the series at 16:9 instead of cropping to 4:3, just for the documentary. That would be neat. I totally get that it's not what the directors intended, and they often kept things in frame that they wouldn't if they were filming with 16:9 in mind. Still, it would be cool from a fan perspective just for the documentary.

They are going 16x9 for the footage in the documentary.
